first of all i would like to thank you guys for helping me out. My questions are as follows. Can you "bind" keys on a usb keyboard to raise or lower brightness of the screen. Second, if i were to get an external screen, would i be able to close the screen of my laptop. I had one more question, but i cant remember :(

you don't need to create 3 posts in a row when there is an EDIT button.

if you're looking for a new computer, please fill out the 'what should i buy?' sticky in the "What Notebook Should I Buy?" forum.

I never looked into the first thing on your list - I don't believe you can. The laptop's keyboard will have buttons on it that you can use to lower/raise the screen brightness (usually a combination of Function + F keys).
As for the second question - yes, you can make the external display primary and not have the laptop screen be on at all.

But you can't set the external display primary AND the laptop screen secundary. (if you don't clone)

You can if you enable cloning in your graphics card drivers.

I use dual displays with my laptop. I have an external 17" desktop monitor which I use as my primary, and I have the laptop's display set to secondary.

@chaz: I'm not sure, but maybe it's because you have a vga connection in stead of dvi ??
    I have dvi.

The primary display is where you'll have the Start menu/bar, and all your desktop icons - the secondary display is all empty space, and you can move stuff over there.

    Check your graphics driver options.
