Hey there,
I have a HP Pavilion dv2700 and it's starting to give me quite a headache when it comes to games. I set my laptop to the high performance setting and try to play a game and it will run fine for the first couple of minutes. After those few minutes the fps in the game will plummet and the game will become unplayable. I think it may be because my laptop is getting a bit warm, but it's not that unsettling to me.
Now, is my laptop just going to be unable to play many games because it gets a bit warm and then craps out, or is there something else to it? Is vista somehow slowing down my computer even though I set it to the fastest performance?
It's rather annoying when I try to play a game and it will run just fine with a good fps then 5 minutes later i can't play anything anymore because the fps just dropped down below 10 all because it's starting to get warm.
Is there any way I can figure out why it's slowing itself down (I think)?
AMD Dual Core
4GB Ram
7150m GPU
With those specs you would think games would run just fine.
Games I try to play:
WoW
Guild Wars
CSS
CS 1.6
Day of Defeat
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Battlefield 2
Diablo II
With all those games even the older ones, the second the laptop starts getting warm to the touch, the performance craps out.

Download HWmonitor and let it run in the backround then post a screenshot on here.
if it does get to hot then there is nothing you can do other then get a notebook cooler from newegg.com
or undervolt it
post a screen shot then if its to hot try the undervolting guide -
oh wow after getting done playing something the cpu was at 55-60 and the gpu was in the 75ish area, I'll get back to you tomorrow with some more.
-
However, the games you listed shouldn't be that bad, and the way you describe the problem does sound like overheating. -
Why is it that your computer slows down when it overheats?
-
Computers have built-in safety throttles for important components. When the CPU or GPU reaches a certain temp, it should throttle back to allow it to cool. This is a simplified explanation from a non-expert... but is pretty much how it works.

I'm just a bit surprised at how fast my laptop over heats though. I mean sometimes it will take only about 3-5 minutes on a game like WoW or Guild Wars. Even with the older games it eventually over heats. It seems like when I put it on high performance it just over heats because it feels like it.

Just about to start, time is 2:00

2 Minutes into the game, fps just dropped

1 Minute after I stopped playing

schrollbach, do you mind thumbnailing your pics? Thanks.

that is overheating for sure......
try undervolting guide
or a notebook cooler from newegg.... you may wanna reapply your termal paste as well -
I have a HP Pavilion Dv2000 and it plays games pretty well. You should send it to Hp, maybe it's one of the graphics problems. I sent mine to HP and it now
works perfectly.

Yeah, your cooling has gone to crap. Your idle temps are what your in-game temps should be and your in game temps are high for the CPU and GPU. I'd say clean the vents with a good ole can o' air and if that doesn't fix it, send it to HP.
-
Heres a suggesting that should set you down 15C which would make your games playable, and your notebook COOLER.
Definattly take off HP's crappy thermal paste and apply Artic silver 5 or OCZ freeze. This is thermal paste. If you want to lower your gpu by a few degrees than you can do the copper mod. Basically apply artic silver and a small copper shim that KTRON SELLS and it lowers your gpu temps. DID you try dusting out your fans? And lastly its optional, you could just buy a notebook cooler. -
Like i said before all these ^^ are your options to lower your temps other wise send it back to HP.....
Good luck with a new system because my tx1000 GPU hits 128c ..... -
Some GPU's "slow protect" at 100C. Yours is cook'in. Are your fans running? Not playing laptop with vents blocked?
Your fans should be at high speed at those temps or call call HP. -
Theres no way it runs at 128 C that thing would actually cook eggs, lol you got to get that down
-
do you really not believe me?
ill provide pictures i made a thread about it -
Lol i would actually like to see pics, i do believe you, thats freakin insane though, do you still use the computer for gaming?
