There are lots of smaller Indie games that get released without having the marketing hype machine of a big AAA studio behind them.
Sometimes the lack of attention is perfectly okay since a recent (already) overplayed trend seems to be to make a game with an 8bit pixel look and chiptunes, and then call it a day. I guess that does get somewhat tiring.
Other times, however, you get gems like Cook, Serve, Delicious! ($8.95 directly from the dude who makes it) and Hotline Miami ($9.99/8,49€ on Steam).
Cook, Serve, Delicious! is a restaurant simulator (of all things!) where you have to 'cook' the meals yourself and Hotline Miami is a crazy, top-down action game with a awesome soundtrack that evokes comparisons to movies like Drive. Yes, Hotline Miami has some of the things I called overplayed a few paragraphs up. Somehow that doesn't matter here.
Both games have excellent Quick Looks on Giant Bomb that show off the games quite nicely. I recommend you watch them both if you're looking for a fresh, new game:

Quick Look: Hotline Miami (23:29)

(The floor is, of course, open if you have other recommendations of smaller, noteworthy games that people should take a look at).

Don't know if it really qualifies, as I think it did get some attention, but if you like space sims look up FTL.

Faster Than Light ($9.99/9,99 on Steam or DRM-free from the developer) looks nice, but is not my cup of tea because of its rogue-like nature. I can see why people would dig it though.
Here is the Giant Bomb quick look as well as Totalbiscuit's take on it. -

Guess FTL is going on my Steam sale games to buy.

I do have it now.
Looks like a lot of work. Will give it a go though, although it looks like a time sucking addictive game.

Smaller Indie games that get overlooked, but rightfully deserve the attention
