Hi!
I have a gaming laptop. When I check the system requirements of a game I often get negative feedback such as I couldn't run the game or with just 15fps. Every time the GPU is too weak. Meanwhile there are lots of videos on youtube with the same game being played on the same or similar setup with stable 30fps. It's bothering me because I can't get a clear picture so I am afraid to buy some games. Can anybody explain this situation? Are the videos fake or the sys.req. comparison sites are inaccurate?
An example:
Star Wars Battlefront
- a site says I can run it on 1080p ~ 15fps
vs. there some videos:My specs are: Asus RoG G551VW
- CPU: i7-6700HQ 2.60Hz
- RAM: 8GB
- GPU: GeForce GTX 960m 4GB

Yes, you can run it. Assuming there is no throttling.
-
So you imply that these sys.req. sites are mostly inaccurate?
Also care to explain what how you mean 'throttling'?
Thanks! -

The G551J series had throttle points set extremely low and caused throttling where the should be none.
As for sys.req files - what do you mean? Is the game not launching properly? -
I just wrote sys.req. sites for shortening system requiremens websites. Where you can check the requirements of games and even compare your setup. Sorry for the confusion.
How could I disable this low throttling if encountered? -

Oh, those sites are mostly garbage and should not be trusted. As for the system requirements specified by developers - those are usually 1 notch higher than what they should be. For example. Witcher 3 lists a 7870 as minimum, however, a friend has a 7790 running the game at 1080p just fine. True, it's 30fps and occasionally it dips to the 20s but it's playable.
As for battlefront - a 960M can run it fine at low settings.
If the card throttles - check for a BIOS update and disable CPU turbo.petercore likes this. -
Thanks for your help! I really apprecite it!

do a search on your card and then "benchmarks" (gtx 960m benchmarks). This will give you an idea of at least some games. For instance:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-960M.138006.0.html
Scroll down to bottom of page and it shows multiple games and the framerate of your card at various settings for that game. Star Wars Battlefront is One of the ones listed. You can use those games to get a rough idea of how it will perform in other similar games as well. Don't always trust YouTube videos either as people will sometimes misrepresent their systems performance.petercore likes this. -

Thanks Awhispersecho! This page is very helpful! From now on I will check games and performances here.
Hey Talon! You have great videos! Meanwhile I tried the trial version of Battlefront. The game set itself on medium settings. It is so beautiful and runs very smooth. Haven't checked with and fps counter yet by I assume it to be near 40fps. -

No worries. And yes, BF1 is a great looking game and is well optimized. Runs good on a variety of hardware.

Has anyone tried to run BF1 below recommended with any success?

Below recommended or below minimum?

I have a 960m. The game set itself on medium settings and produces fps between 50 and 60.

From some tests I saw 2 years ago for the 960M, then 60fps is doable on 1080p. I'm not sure if it's ultra settings though. I think it's medium or high at the max.
-
Most system requirements are highly unreliable! The only game I can think of with a decent one is Street Fighter V despite the game being a bit demanding and the online sucking dried nut-sacks.
-
Most games scale surprisingly well. My biggest issue actually has been the crappy custom resolution support of Intel GPU. Usually if you can downgrade to 800 x 450 resoltion (16:9) you can get any relatively modern Intel GPU to run any relatively recent game. Some games are just horribly optimized and need decent GPU power regardless, but you'd be surprised at what you can get to run on low spec hardware.

Witcher 3 runs at 1680 × 1500 very well on my 860M which has been OCed (see signature for Fire Strike—it's faster than your 960M even).
I have everything set to ultra except HairWorks (switched off), shadow quality (set to medium), foliage rendering distance (medium) and background characters (set to high). I use the HBAO+ AO solution, no V-Sync, no framerate locking. Framerates are consistently between 30 to 45 FPS, sometimes going down to 25, sometimes going up to 55, even 60 in relatively empty areas, but that is rare. Usually framerates are 35 FPS, and it's completely playable and still looks incredible.
So can I run it or not???
