I saw a similar thread on the steam forums, and was curious about our own community. It looks like a lot of people caved in and bought it anyway, so I think we are definitely the minority now.
Personally, I didn't buy it out of principle. Especially after reading about the short yet epic SP, gimped multiplayer, and of course the $60 price tag.
I don't want to turn this into flame war, so lets keep it clean. Just wanna know who skipped this one.![]()

I was very gung-ho about buying it about 4 months ago. Then some other games came to mind, which made MW2 look less appealing (though I still wanted it). Then came the dedicated server fiasco... I can say I'm never touching it. I've never played Crysis before, and there's a nice deal on Steam at the moment where you can get Crysis, Crysis Wars, and Crysis Warhead all for $30 USD. I bought that instead. Gonna play it over the weekend. I hope it's good. Is the multiplayer any good? I really need a fun and captivating FPS multiplayer experience that isn't cel shaded (so not TF2
). Nothing has been able to replicate that since Quake 3.
-
I ended up buying from newegg before I realized the single player is only like 4-5 hours. I mainly bought it for single player anyhow because I really really loved the original single player campaign.
I might dabble in multiplayer, but not really my bag. Maybe I'll like it this time around, who knows. I think the new multiplayer system may appeal more to me because I just want to pop in and play periodically. But being a die-hard BF2 gamer, I can see how lack of dedicated servers really blows.
I never planned on boycotting to begin with though. -
Since I found out about no dedicated servers I told myself that I will not buy it. I have not bought it and do not ever plan on buying it either.
-
There was a article on Kotaku about people who were "aginst" buying Modern Warfare 2.
What Modern Warfare 2 boycotters are really playing?. -
ironic, teeheee

I certainly didn't buy it. Been playing BF2 mostly lately, and I even played a bit of CoD4 earlier just because I can
-
Played MP for the first time last night (taking a break from SP) it was awesome, way more fun than COD4's MP imo.... I dont know what the problem is....
I also like how you can join random games, that teams are randomly assaigned so you dont end up playing agaist 9 hard core people that are sitting in the same room and they just run house on you.
However, you CAN setup games like that in private games, or regular matches choose your team, but its a nice little option to join the team deathmatches that put the teams together randomly every round. -

I didn't buy it, give me my dedicated servers so I can...umm...something...
-
didnt waste my money on this one..but i played it through..
i emjoyed the great but way too short singleplayer + i saved my moneh for games that are worth it -
I beat my buddy in Heroes of Newerth and he gifted me the game after I said I'm too busy for rematches
He lost another 4 times and I got a free Dragon Age Origins -
haha...That like was classic!
I still have not bought the game! I don't plan on buying it until it had dedicated server support.
I am still looking on a good deal to buy COD4 though....Once it hits 20 or below I am in! -
Didn't buy it since my laptop is "In Production".
-
I said I wasn't going to buy it, and I didn't.
Until there are dedicated servers it won't be in competitive leagues. And until then, I have no interest. -
I haven't bought it. If I ever do, it'll be used for PS3. I won't contribute to activision's sales numbers.
-
na. i didnt buy it. i dont have a job. though i wouldnt have bought it if i did. cause activision is evil. though i will probably buy it after it hits 40ish bucks
-
To all you who didn't buy it, you're missing out, BIG TIME.
I got it on 360, and i'm ADDICTED, my social life has gone out the window. -
Didn't buy it and probably never will. Just got Crysis off of Steam, still playing Mass Effect, and Dragon Age is my next buy once I'm done with both.
-
Still didnt buy it due to the price point. I waiting for it to be like 30 bucks or cheaper if Im going to get it.
-
Nope, i said I wouldn't and I won't, if i wanted a console port, I would buy a console and skip the port. I did buy L4D2 and Operation Flashpoint 2, both of which are awesome, cheaper AND have lots of bells and whistles added. next up is Dragon Age and then in the Spring: AVP3!
And all come with mouse support included as a standard feature even! -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
i preordered the game
I'm not into competitive leagues or anything... I just like to play with my friends-
co-op mode steals the show.
online rocks too, despite dedicated server non-support. -
ive been a Fan of the COD series for a while, but after i saw the Pricetag of $60 for PC ive come to the conclusion that it can wait.
and no dedicated servers?!? ehh looks like this Game was strickly made for the console gamers -
....Anyway, I won't be buying this game and will quicker buy another copy of COD4 at this point in time since that game will have a much longer life than this one. At first, I was wary of purchasing COD4 thinking that a sequel would have been near by....but this game might as well be a downgrade....so I am happy with my non purchase of the game that holds the name Modern Warfare 2. I will not put my money towards less privileges and the suppression of creativity. -
rofl... This messsage brought to you from never never land, where inflation doesn't exist, profits don't matter, and everyone lives happily ever after for free, and by people who don't try things before hating them.
p.s. this game is by no means a downgrade, and how exactly has it surpressed creativity rofl, i mean if creative is taking something that already exisits and just adding a new skin (mods) then wow... if you're really creative or want to be creative go make a whole new game... for real.
-
If quake wasn't moddable and had dedicated servers, where would the community for action quake 2 be?
If half life wasn't moddable and had dedicated servers, where would that same group that got success from action quake 2 and then made counterstrike be?
Again, if half life wasn't moddable, where would the game that cod4 stole its ideas from, Insurgency be?
Where would Left 4 Dead which is essentially the integrated co-op from Sven Co-op plus vampire/zombie server mods be?
When I play COD4, sometimes I play a normal game of sabotage and sometimes I play on a rank based zombie server. A mod made by people who love the game and want to add a new experience to it.
Where is this with Modern Warfare 2? As it stands right now?
An expansion pack? -
As far as I am concrned pc gamers deserve a little more. If pricces are raised for of games we deserve slot more -
Your right I'm a Infinity Ward employee obviously rofl.
im sure cod4 didn't steal its idea's from isurgency but w/e.
either which way your arguments have no merit until you play the game. Plus again, game has been our what 2 days? we have no idea what they are going to end up doing with the game, plus who buys games just for the mods? Even when I bought HL it wasn't for the mods, it was for HL, the mods are just a nice little bonus, an afterhthought, if your were hoping MW2 would be released jsut for mods well thats backwards thinking imo.
but hey to each his own. -
Consoles games weren't always 60 either...they went up when the next gen sutff was released royalties w/e still had to do with it costs more to make the games for these high end systems than it did to make games for like N64. plus inflation, PC games have been $50 for what 15 years? more maybe?
What cost $50 in 1998 would cost $65.76 in 2008 for instance and we just got this price raise... its been a long time coming? -
Serious, if you are going to bait someone, do a better job. Either use more subtle tactics or just go all out. -
-
Steam is great in realizing that the way to gain the most profit is to sell games at original price (demand is high) for a while then when the demand drops, to sell the game at steadily lower prices. They realize that if someone didn't buy it at 60$ 2 months after it came out its likely they're never going to shell out 60$ for the game. -
-
i held out, partially because of the price
-
I held out for the first day to see what people really think, checked out some Youtube gameplay vids and reviews and such, and figured it didn't look as bad as people were making it out to be.
So, I bought it yesterday, played through the campaign and got a few ranks in multiplayer. I gotta say, it's not nearly as bad as I thought it was, and the campaign just blew my mind. -
Here, I am going to list some mods for you, and you tell me if they're simple re-skins of if they've really done something.
HL mod: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counter-Strike
HL mod: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ship_(video_game)
HL mod: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_Fortress_Classic
HL2 mod: http://www.zombiepanic.org/site/index.php
Seriously - Re-think your statement. Many games that have come out in the past few years were mods before stand alone games. If not for the modding community, you wouldn't even have Call of Duty [IT'S A QUAKE MOD].
As for the price, I'm cool with that. -
Also, I only want it for the single player. I don't really care WHAT IW does to the mp - no dedicated servers, dedicated servers you have to pay for, MP via carrier pigeon with matchmaking services in Swahili only, it just doesn't matter. -
bought it, played it, loved it, finished it in 7 hours.
very good story line even though some of it is very far fetched and over the top.
dedicated servers doesnt bother me as im not in a clan or even play multiplayers much but it is very adictive. i prefer the free for all as anything that moves you shoot it.
wonder if next years next instalment will have DS? -
I won't buy it unless we have to have for lanparty gaming with my friends. I'm really on the fence about L4D2 because they are mentioning it for next weekend and I haven't bought that either.
I don't really want either of these. -
-
i won't skip it, just won't buy it on release day.
plan to get it when the price goes to about 20 dollars. -
Didn't "Buy" it, probably won't. But the SP was amazing even if it was short.
-
-
-
Agreed.. All these ppl who swear they're gonna boycott the game , buy and play it.. complete hypocrites and we got some of them on this forum...
-
-
Lol i just found this on digg -
If the majority of people bought MW2 primarily for the multiplayer.......then in that sense, I did hold out....never having gone online with MW or MW2 (what little MP action I get, I get from L4D).
$60 might have been a high price to pay for a single player campaign (why I bought it), but it was so engaging/epic IMO, that the price was somewhat fair. -
I didn't get it. Won't be for some time.

No you're missing the point... I am not, not going to buy a great game just because it doesn't have mod support or w/e!! I think that is nuts! Plus I am sure without mods, alot of games similar too the above mentioned mods eventually would of come out anyway 2cents.
So..who stuck to their guns and held out on MW2?
