Soldier of Fortune PAYBACK "Review"

Okay, i just got this game, installed it, and now im in the process of UNINSTALLING IT. i consider myself very lucky that i only paid 10 dollars for this game because of a deal i made with a friend of mine. this game is LITERALLY GARBAGE. i cannot believe i was thinking this game might have some potential, but that was largely because of IGN's exclusive videos of the gameplay.

first off, if you have vista.. do not play this game. i called activision and they said this game is exclusively for xp.. basically if you play it in vista you will 99.9% most likely have the game crash within 3-4 minutes of play.

second, the controls, omg... i dont even know how to explain it. its like aiming with a gun underwater the whole time, its just floating all over the place, u cant even aim.

third, the graphics are NOTHINNG like i thought they'd be. yeah its gory all right, but thats not what will get your nauseated. its the fact that the characters in the game are just plain ugly. the textures are weak, everything is weak.

fourth, this is a BUDGET TITLE. i noticed that when i saw the msrp of this game as 39.99 , i knew something had to be up with it. if you played painkiller overdose you know what you expect here...

so basically, dont even think about buying this game, even if your the biggest and most hardcore fan of soldier of fortune games. just don't play this game, play double helix if you want, but DONT PLAY THIS GAME.

the maximum game rating we have is MA15+ we don't have an 18+ one. and i don't think it was because its crap, because a lot of crap ones make it to our shores

 

I actually like this game a lot. It's got it's faults, but it's not trying to be the next "Crysis" it's just a fun shooter. I think double helix had a few things better than this game (such as duel wielding) but this game does a lot of things WAY better than double helix. It definitely won't be for everyone, but I wouldn't knock this game so fast.

 

I'll be trying it out tomorrow, the game is made by Cauldron instead of Raven, so it's really nothing to do with SOF except a common name.

Cauldron made a lot of crap games, but some good ones like Civil War and Chaser...

 

Ok, I have to agree with the original poster. This is a mess of epic proportions. The graphics are so utterly bland, the gore is crap. Guys head flies off when you shot him with a pistol, it does NOT have a damage model system like SOF2 or even the original SOF game. It's just random violence that's almost cartoon-ish.

Plus, it's so budget it's laughable. In the 'Enter Name' screen you have to click on the letters with your mouse! It's just so pathetic, it begs belief.

Finally, mine kept crashing, even on XP. Oh, and - you can't even TALK in multiplayer.

I would heartily give this 1/10. An utter disgrace to the brilliant Soldier of Fortune name, if I worked at Raven I would burst into tears upon playing this abomination.

Soldier of Fortune 1 is a better game then this, let alone the brilliant SOF2.

 

People expect to much these days, if it was full priced yes, but its a budget title so take it from that perspective (Or if you like compare it to other budget titles like "The Hell In Vietnam"). Its simple violent mindless FPS shooter. It fun in a quick and stupid sort of way with it buggyness. I actually liked the weapon and scope choices you get in this game. The graphics need a lot of optimisation thou. Not many levels either.

If you had a long day at work and just need to relieve some stress you can get the RPG in this game and fire away at the enemy and laugh at the cartoony gibs. Take Solider of Fortune Payback as people did when "Sniper: Path of Vegeance" came out.

I think there is plenty of A grade and realistic shooters out there if people are not happy with this game but i can understand some people disappointed it didn`t live up to SOF 2 expectations.

 

Yeah but the difference is that it's got a name to live up to. After all, how would you feel if Team Fortress 3, Call of Duty 5 or Half Life 3 came out the same quality as SOF3 did?? Rightly pissed, I'd imagine... Think about it that way....Sniper Path of Vengence and Hell in Vietnam had nothing to live up to and they meant nothing to anybody. Just mindless budget shooting. SOF has a legacy. And Payback just ****s all over that...

 

It's SOF, that should be enough to put most people off it.

 

Yes, because the massive success of the first two games is clear indication of that...

 

Need For Speed is also a successful franchise :/

I'm not surprised this game turned out bad, the only trailers I saw for it showed nothing of worth, and seemed to focus simply on the fact that you could shoot bits off people. It'd be okay if it had a sense of humour or was actually trying to make a serious point, but from what I've seen of it, it's just a horrible game. And besides, I can blow people up in Team Fortress 2 - a killcam showing where your spleen has just landed is always entertaining.

 

This is probably the worst game I've ever played. It feels like it came out of the 90's and has DirectX 7-like graphics with some mediocre shading. Its graphics are about as good as the orignal Call of Duty's graphics.

The AI is a joke. It's not even AI. The guys do the exact same thing every time you play - they run to a spot and start shooting. So, that means you can throw a grenade in a certain spot every time you play and watch the guys get blown to bits. The AI is so bad the guys actually retreat INTO grenades. Really sad. And they run at you with huge guns and try to hit you instead of shooting you. LOL. During the indoor missions, the AI is really cheap and takes cheap shots all the time - they have aimbot on. Sometimes as soon as you turn a corner, your head gets blown off. The guys spawn in waves and just run at you. You can actually just stand behind a corner and wait for them to come around, then melee them.

The gore is . . . gorey, this is a very bloody game. However it is not even remotely realistic. As one poster noted, you can shoot a guy's head, arm, leg, you name it clean off with a PISTOL.

I have no idea what the storyline is . . . there might as well not even be one. It's basically just running around and killing people.

Don't even bother with this game . . . it is bad.

 

Crysis AI is 'almost' as bad as SOF ayback AI. It just looks prettier!!

 

I really enjoyed the first two games, its a real shame its getting such negative reviews, but it is made by a crappy budget developer.

Its MSRP is $39.99 for PC but $59.99 for 360 and PS3!
I wonder if those versions have the glitches you guys are noticing.

Still want to try the game out.
