Umm.. Im sorry if im acting stupid, but from previous knowledge, FPS means Frames Per Second.
I believe you meant video card.
Also, if you DO mean video card, then can you tell what games you want to play?

    FPS also = First-Person Shooter :p

Anywho, if you have a fairly recent/powerful video card, FEAR is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Blowing enemies to bits in slow-mo with a shotgun - doesn't get any better. :D

Im getting off topic, but I agree, FEAR is nice, though I think that blowing enemies to bits isnt as fun as nailing them to walls...
Anyway, what video card do you have? Depending on the video card, you may or may not be able to play some of the games listed

Battlefield 2142 (Like BF2 except futuristic, plenty more unlocks to work for, graphics are good).
Battlefield 2 (Classic modern warfare FPS.)

regardless, you should really pick up the source premier pack from steampowered.com. half-life and half-life 2 are two of the best single-player experiences around. period. as for the fps genre, half-life 2 is my personal pick at best of.

as for multiplayer games, the source premier pack comes with counter-strike: source and day of defeat: source. while not as great as counter-strike 1.6, cs: source is a great multiplayer game while dod: source is just plain old fun.

you get it all with the source premier pack (hl1: source, hl1: source deathmatch, hl2, hl2: deathmatch, cs: source, and dod: source) for only $60. for what you're getting, i think it's a steal.

if you then want to explore other fps games on different engines other than source, check out battlefield 2 (or 2142) for its epic-style gameplay. while it doesn't control that well and its a bit glitchy now and then, bf2 has the best class balance of any game.

another great single-player fps is fear. it's great because the atmosphere really puts you in the moment. i don't think i've ever been as scared in a video game. you can download the demo for free to check it out.

if your looking for a good fps single player adventure - i would suggest FEAR and Rainbow Six Vegas.

if your looking for online play - i would suggest FEAR COMBAT (its the whole fear multiplayer game for absolutely free - www.joinfear.com), or if your computer can handle it - the new ghost recon advanced warfighter 2. And of course, if you can get it to work on your setup - battlefield 2.

    mike's wonderful recommendations: f.e.a.r, f.e.a.r combat, hl2, hl2:episode 1, counter-strike:source, call of duty 2.

if you have to buy one first, go with a package that includes source and the two half life 2's. Episode 1 is better than the original, but it's very short. f.e.a.r. combat is free so have fun. Call of Duty 2 I played for the first time and make sure you play this with a sound system because the single player demo I played was intense and fun. Not sure about the multiplayer, but it's probably fine. Btw, Source will give you the most out of your money because there are many custom mods and maps you can play, and it teaches you how to play a fps the right way. It has the most gameplay value.

If you are looking for "older" first person shooters i surely recommend Wolfenstein Enemy Territory. Its an online team-based shooter and you can download it for free! http://www.3dgamers.com/games/wolfensteinet/downloads/

Good enough. Actually one of my all-time favorites. The open-ended nature of the island was a complete surprise for me, so used to walk neverending corridors. With above average AI, by the way.

I absolutely recommend it. I prefer it to FEAR and much more than HL2, just to name a few.

Far Cry 2 has just been announced, but it´ll be a long, long time...

I suggest FEAR, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (dont underestimate a free fps!), STALKER, and COD2 (or COD4 when it is released by Christmas)
