just read the thread about bf1942 and people were saying WWII is now overdone.
would you buy a game based on WWI? that would definitely be refreshing

I just Google'd that a bit and it looks like the consensus is slow or lack of vehicles/tanks, almost all weapons were bolt action (lack of variety) and no real automatics other than mounted MG's... basically a lot of people are saying it would be boring or hard to make interesting and wouldn't sell well...
I think it could be done.. There have been a few WWI games but they are mainly indie games or HL mods. -
try call of duty 1
-
Wrong war.
-
eyesight saw WWII and WWI as the same thing DOH! me need an eye test
-
Trench warfare...oh gawd that would be boring!
-
You're all thinking the wrong time period for a WWI FPS. Instead of doing the first 3 years, do the last year. 1918 had tanks, automatic weapons, flamethrowers and storm troopers. All using combined arms and infiltration tactics with air support (mainly recon). The end of the war was a precursor to WW2 in nearly every aspect. I think the 1918 German offensive and Allied counter offensive would be immensely interesting to play. Although, no mainstream developer or publisher would go for it. Someone like Tripwire, a former mod group, would end up doing it.
-
If they did a historically correct start to finsih ww1 game with like 100 hours of campaign, make it co-op and an online story mode to play with stranger , then maybe it could be possible. Trench warfare was overly popular in WW1 with most of the fighting being that, also chemical warfare (the use of mustard gas) did all the dirty work for most of the war. That said the right context and a gritty enough setting could sell.
-
I love how in this day and age, we're discussing which war was most exciting, with the greatest amount of weapons, etc. Funny lol
Oh, and some chemical gas attacks unleashed on your enemies would be sick!!! -
Try and tell me this would not make an awesome game:
(Note: it is rather violent)

Yes I would not like to play that, It's bad enough we got black ops instead of modern wafare 3
-
No offense, but I found that nauseating and depressing. Not that it wouldn't make a decent game...that scene just disturbed me more than made me want to experience it in a game format. Pretty damned horrific.Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015

If they made a WW1-based FPS shooter it would just be a massive campfest.
-
Yeah, it's pretty gruesome. I've put it in spoiler tags with a note for the benefit of everyone else.
That said, I assume a game based on it would be considerably less bloody, because that's just how games tend to be. Although I would love to beat an enemy to death with a shovel
-
Watch The Lost Battalion, with the Battle of Belleau Wood, instead. Passchendaele was all too typical of WWI battles, inconclusive with thousands dead. The Eastern Front would be really interesting, it was quite mobile (too large a front to keep entrenched and garrisoned). The Middle East battles would be really fun, especially the Arab Revolt. I think this is overlooked, because in the West, we think of endless trenches as the war. That was only endemic to the Western Front (and some points in the Italian and Balkan Fronts).

Funny you should say that because the Soldier in your avatar has a shovel in Team Fortress 2.

Imagine a world war today.
Would there be more or less destruction/death?
First-world nations have more destructive weapons, but also more accurate ones.
I wonder if or how long it would take for nukes to be used.
Imagine the possible toll on life. -
Already a lot of games about this kind of thing. Hell, there is even a lot "what if" WW3 scenarios set during the Cold War.
-
Why didn't the approaching force shoot? They're like zombies or something.
Seriously, that reminded me of Nazi Zombies from World at War. They were just kind of staggering over to the entrenched force there.Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
Didn't you hear? The German AI was seriously nerfed after they whipped the Russians, and successfully held off the French + Colonials, Commonwealth, British + Indian Army, Italians, Romanians, Serbians, Portuguese for 3 years. The developers decided that Germans were OP and needed to be balanced. /sarcasm
-
And the French had horses when the Germans had tanks. :-D -
I think you're wrong there, the Germans used captured British tanks and their mammoth A7V Sturmpanzer, which was only made in small numbers and apparently quite ineffective. The French had the FT-17 which essentially invented many aspects of a modern tank (such as a turret). Even in WW2 the Allies had more tanks than the Germans throughout the war (only 1900 Tiger tanks were ever made, compared to some 50 thousand M4 Shermans). Common WW2 misconceptions also include that the Polish cavalry charged tanks, this is untrue. Polish Cavalry charges were often effective and used primarily against infantry. Germans also did cavalry charges on the Polish front.

Exactly
I considered mentioning that in my post, but thought better of it.
Someone needs to make a WWI FPS
