Are there any good space RTS games, or space games where you command ships, build space bases, or colonize planets?

    if so please recommend here....

    Thanks.

Sins of a Solar Empire - highly recommended, haven't played it much, battles can take HOURS to complete. But quite fulfilling nevertheless.

Galactic Civilizations 2 (Turn Based) - Like Civilization but with a twist, in space

what sort of DRM does sins have?

How does the digital download work? Any chance this getting on STEAM?

You get it on Stardock's version of STEAM. Go to the Sin's website or Stardock. You will be lead to the digital download. There is no DRM, but if you want the updates (they update the game significantly) you have to register with them, but a digital download should take care of those worries.

Don't get this game if you only game in hour chucks. This game eats weekends. If I had the time, this would be a great game, but there isn't a campaign though (not needed).

What do you mean theres no campaign? Do you build a civilization from start to finish, expand fight enemies, take over planets etc. etc. or is just skirmishes???

Sin is definately the best one i've played. Only bad thing is when you play against AI they will constantly run away from huge confrontations when they are losing so you can never quite destroy their main fleet unless you severely outnumber them(plus you miss out on the awesome destruction of massive fleet battles which are my favorite).

Even though im pretty sure you're familar with them, I'll mention Homeworld and Homeworld II. If you havnt played them they are classics in the genre! and they're are a ton of mods out there to give the game more life :D only wish they made a third one cause the engine is quite dated compared to sins...

    Sins.

and IF you really like space, EVE online has free 14 days. I play it and it's great but very complex and has to do a lot with the game's economy.

If I'm not mistaken, EVE online is scheduled to die early next year.

    Lol... retro

No... just no. Starcraft in the context of today is a mediocre RTS..

Absolutely no DRM. Stardock is very firmly against DRM

It allows you to run away too

So I got sins and what not... it is VERY Hard to play imo... I don't know maybe I am not used to the controls yet and stuff, but navigating and moving around is fairly hard.... Also I have no idea how to advance my tech lol - all I could build was frigates... The tutorials were not all that helpful either..

Any advice? Especially about movement, it seems so sensitive I am constantly zooming in and out to far or turning to fast... and how do I zoom in and follow a particular unit? I struggle to keep up with units in combat and stuff.......

How do I get new tech/build up base etc lol. I don't want this to have been a waste of $30 bucks lol

it takes a minute to get used to it. but once you do you'll be able to do anything. and with the zoom in thing. just move your mouse to a unit and zoom in an it will follow it and right click and you'll be able to change angles. so just click the unit and use the zoom in button and you will follow it were ever it's going

I haven't played EVE in a while, but I hardly think it'll die by then. They've got ambulation and Tech 3 ships coming out around March so it'll be at least late 2009 when it dies. :D

Also, another decent game is Star Wars: Empire at War. I would skip the expansion though as the 3rd faction feels overpowered.

EVE online closing next year? I've not heard anything about this happening? Can you provide a link or any info on this please!

Sins is a brilliant game. It is annoying though when the AI runs. Secret is too trying pincering them in. Engage them in the main system, and have another fleet in the system you think they'll run too. Then have fun :D

I thought the controls were excellent and intuitive, not very complicated either. But it does take a long time to finish one game. I never even tried one of the large maps, that would take days to finish!

Have you looked at Beyond Protocol? Its a MMO, but has a trial universe you can play in which is pretty good. VERY complicated though, but if you like unit customisation and playing with other human players, def give it a look in.

I used to play Mankind for years, that was an awesome MMO, Beyond Protocol looks even better.

I think he's more leaning towards space RTS, like Sins? If not, then you must play Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance! Awesome game! :D

    Oh the irony...

Starcraft was a bloody amazing game in its time a decade ago. It's a decade later and there are so many RTS games today that expanded on the RTS concept way beyond starcraft. SCII should be amazing but we shall have to wait and see.

It's played competitively so much in Korea purely because its got that critical mass of players obsessed with it. It's like saying counterstrike is the best first-person shooter ever.

For good pure space rts (Starcraft isn't "space" per se...it's still only on individual planets, even if we're talking about galaxies in the plot), there really is only Sins out there today...

On the other hand, Entrenchment (an expansion pack) is due out in January, but you can buy it and play the current beta already - pretty much a finished product. ($10). Expansion adds some units, more tech, some tweaks, and starbases and fortifications. If you thought games took a long time before, they take MUCH longer now if someone took the time to add starbases to their frontier planets--those things add some serious survivability.

Basically each planet can have one starbase, which doesn't take up any tactical or logistic slots. Each starbase can have 8 upgrades, which can range from hangars, repair bays, shielding, long-range weapons, extra offensive/defense capabilities, extra trade route stops, more tax income, and other faction-specific upgrades, such as phase stabilizers and enforced loyalty (planet can't be conquered until starbase is destroyed) etc...

In answer to someone's question earlier, there is no campaign in Sins or in Entrenchment, although there's some plotline that isn't too original (think Supreme Commander, it's nearly identical).

I'm not quite sure about directions...there's a manual and tutorial, but you didn't find it helpful. I'd just say play and experiment. Most of it is pretty self-explanatory. You can also check the official forums for charts of all the units and general strategies.

I'd say its more original to Galactic Civilizations in terms of plot. Supcom actually tried to have some decent plot with actual people.

Another one I forgot to mention, Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. No base building or resource collection - just fleet battles. I never got past the first mission because of the steep learning curve, but it's supposed to be pretty good once you get passed it.

Sins is a very good space rts but it does take some time to get used to the interface and controls, they can be a bit twitchy. Just keep at it and keep the manual around as that has all the info there.

the middle button on the top row with the beaker will pull up your science screen. there you will be able to pick what you want to research.

the game definitely takes a long time to play (a la Civilization series)

Sins of a Solar Empire - buy this game they did SUCH a great job and its cheap!

Galactic Civilizations II Gold - fantastic game

Space Rangers 2 Complete - GREAT combination of rts and turn based strategy this game is a winner and by the same developers that made sins (sins is newer)

Get impulse (a program online) and you can buy these games off their service. I got sins and space rangers 2 from impusle its a solid online distribution platform.

just a heads up havent replied because i got the controls under..... control lol.

anyway loving the game... loving it - always struggle to make $$ at the start though and then it gets easy when I get a few cap. ships... wish the enemy would coordinate forces more for instead coming in piecemail

my fav. attacking a sytem with 5,6,7+ (have up to 13 I think thus far attack a system dont even need anything else at that point) cap ships... only played as TEC tho.

any hints for getting more income early on?

    thanks

I have no idea where you received that information. I play the game every so often during the week and I keep up with the latest news and that news or rumor has never gone by me. Like someone said they are coming out with new ships and have even said they plan to have station exploration via a moveable character and have mentioned planet exploration. Plus they have been advertising it pretty heavily on the internet recently and I even saw a TV commercial not too long ago. I doubt a developer would pour that much money into something they plan to kill.

If EVE was scheduled to die...I would have heard about it from in game players a long time ago.

Are you sure you have not mistaken it with another space MMO? I'm not sure but Jumpgate is coming out with a new client and maybe they are ending Jumpgate to make way for Jumpgate Evolution. I don't know.

Only way i found to get more money early is by expanding. Also helps if you pick the cap ship that can colonize as it's bonus ability. Then send your colony ships out and colonize more planets before building up your home planet's infulstructure. Just dont over extend lol and use choke points so defense is easier

I usually start out with a colonizer cap ship. The early systems can be defeated by this cap ship without using antimatter, and this allows you to basically take over several planets and colonize them all at once without having to spend the extra resources to build an extra colonizer frigate, at least on one front.
