Just a heads up for anyone who backed Chris Roberts' new baby, Star Citizen... if you didn't already know, the Hanger Module (pre-Alpha) just launched a little while ago. Although there's no actual gameplay, it gives you a chance to check out your ship(s) and roam around the hanger, and it should give you a pretty good idea of what kind of eyecandy to expect later on down the road as the game develops (Crytek engine, mmmmmm). So if you're an early backer (and you still can be at this point), head on over to the website and start downloading!

Looks like a eveonline ripoff, no offense... which I've been playing for years...

More like the original... the creator, Chris Roberts, is the creator/producer of the original Wing Commander series, Privateer, Starlancer, and Freelancer. Those games are EXACTLY where EVE gets its roots. Having played EVE for a few years myself, and having done extensive research and following of the Star Citizen development, I can tell you that the two are very much different styles of gameplay. Star Citizen is aiming to focus a lot more on the combat system as well as out of ship exploration, while not focusing quite as heavily on economics (although trading, scrapping, mining, etc. are all there as well). Keep following it, woodzstack, I have no doubt it will be a fantastic addition to space sim fans like you and I

hmm Ratchet you might have a point... I will be following it... Im just a little saddened by the fact they will deliver on things that EVE has promised for years and abandoned or failed to deliver.. their patches are very small and minimum, always going back and forth rebalancing ships instead of actually adding content...
we can walk in our own personal station but.... no where else..
Today I was on fire, almost dead, 2% structure, I docked in a station.. my ship was not on fire... odd.. the only place able to sustain a fire would be where theres also an atmosphere.. hmm so I got out of the ship, looked at. got back in, undocked, and the ship was on fire, OUT IN SPACE..
a fire in a vacuum actually looks like an electrical shortage, with sparks flying everywhere - because a fire is just energy in a way, right... without the atmosphere, there would be no flames, only the sparks...
so I tried to fly upside down and meet another ship having a different "UP" direction then him.. doing a complete barrel roll.. no matter how poften I try, my ship always faces the same as everyother ship, as if theres gravity in space..
I tried to take look at some FW and did my first orbital combardment. I later got a message saying I did damage and killed someone. didn't see what really happened. No cool effects. Make no isk. no one thanked me.
Yet dust514 and eve are aparantly connected. IMO its like one system sending a mail to another - not really connecte din real Time..
yet dust 514 is F2P.. I can't help but think all the money eve makes, goes to some free game on playstation - with false promises to connect and be immersive with eveonline - yet its just an illusion.
Nothing makes sense. Ive been disappointed in eve's extremely slow progress... it boasted soo much work on CARDON UI but was used to do nothing more then create another game, for console.
they're budget is very very small.. a lot smaller every year then this Star Citizen's kickstarter is by a long shot.
eve boasts having the whole community on a single server.. neverminding you have to spends months before your really able to be well rounded in eve, nevermind years to be fully skilled in some of the later ships... day 1 is pretty much impossible to get involved... -
so weird that not a lot of people on this forum follows star citizen!
i am going into the hangar once every hour to smile during work

Damn, Throbin, I'm jealous you got the Hornet! I've got the 300i, but I've been considering dropping a little more. Star Citizen is seriously going to be EPIC.

While I liked the Wing Commander games (especially Privateer) I haven't avidly followed the development of the game. I know it's crowd funded and there is a hangar to "explore", but that's about it. I was always more of an X-Wing/TIE Fighter series guy when it came to space combat simulators as I just enjoyed the controls/gameplay better. From Origin/Roberts, I liked Strike Commander best, however. I wish they'd remake that game (be it the old missions or new ones) with a modern graphics engine and co-operative (LAN) multiplayer for all campaigns.
Nonetheless I'm looking forward to this game as my old joystick could certainly use a good workout, but as long as there isn't anything else but the hangar to "explore" it doesn't appeal to me that much. Once it gets to a more playable stage, I might just check it out.ratchet916 likes this. -
They're rolling it out in "modules" and the hanger module is simply a tech demo to show the engine and give early supporters a chance to drool over their ships. They're supposed to be rolling out the dogfighting module in December which will give everyone a much better idea of what to expect and a chance to blast each other a bit, should be good fun. Alpha build of the campaign is supposed to be rolled out in April 2014, and the whole package should be up by November 2014.
I have to agree with you though that I would totally play the heck out of another x-wing/tie fighter game or a Strike Commander remastering. I miss having old school space sims so much, I still fire up Descent Freespace 2 and Freelancer from time to time. Keep an eye on Star Citizen though, I have faith that Roberts is gonna slam this one out of the park. -

The original star lancer needs a sequel or are they doing something similar as a little section to star citizen?
-
i just pledged the freelancer $155 one
(anybody know why i cannot edit my signature?) -
There's a single player campaign. That could be the Starlancer part and multiplayer the Freelancer part
They said that finishing the campaign would provide bonus for multiplayer (you did your part!).
I currently have 325a in my hangar but I'm thinking about an explorer model instead.
Well... I stumbled on this thread just by accident while doing a routine spammer sweep
I'd say it would gather a lot more attention in the Gaming subforum. If there is no opposition, moving this thread isn't an issue?
edit: ...aanndd it's here in Gaming.Mr. Fox likes this. -
Excited about it for sure, but waiting for the dogfighting module to dive in. Hanger module was rather glitchy initially and I haven't kept it up to date.
Should be a great game when released. I'm still shocked at the level of financial support from the community. -
