Hi all,
I'm hoping you can help. My partner is hard core into online mmo's and is currently playing Star War Galaxies, LOTR, Pirates of the Carribbean, and just signed up for Star Trek Online. She also plays Dragon Age. (She could never get Conan to play on her current set up, which she bought last spring.)
Here is the setup:
HP Pavilion dv7 with an Intel core 2 duo t6400 @2.00ghz,
4G ram,
Vista 64 bit
ati mobility radeon hd 4650
STO says the video drivers are outdated, and that the game might run slowly or not at all. However, I JUST updated the driver for the vid card - it's the latest one. As it is, playing in safe mode she is lagging and rubberbanding like crazy (when she can get on at all - the servers are massively overloaded...)
I keep reading that this card is still good for gaming, and I don't think it can be replaced. What do you think - is the problem on STO's end, or ours?
Thanks, please know that I'm very much a noob with it comes to the guts of my computer...

Well, I can play STO on my laptop just fine with an 8400M GS, so I am not sure what the issue is with your card not being able to run STO. In any event, I got the same warning saying that my videocard driver is old, and to update it.
Instead of updating my notebook's videocard, I just elected to run the game with reduced graphic settings and the game runs like butter for me. Now, if you're still having problems with running STO, I would consider the following:
1) Slow internet connection
2) Memory requirement not sufficient
3) Videocard settings within the game
4) Bad/corrupt videocard driver install
5) Server is completely jammed with people playing -
Thank you for the reply. I think (hope) that it's just the server jammed. My partner is playing in safe mode, with reduced settings. She got on finally this afternoon by going to the european server, which wasn't so crowded (because it was the middle of the night in europe...) Game played like a charm. So I think it must be just a buggy response in the beta...

Lucky you two! I'm so mad I didn't get a beta key
and I'm upset that they picked some really lame star ship class names, like Destiny, Emissary, and worse of all Dervish lol wth?
Anyways as for your card, it's pretty good and you shouldn't have an issue running a game like STO. I'm willing to bet it's just a game issue as it's still in beta, and perhaps the most recent drivers for your card are not up to date on their server, so it sends out a generic message about it not being up to date as it may just be STO that is not up to date. -

You know whats funny about that?
Im running STO with a 4 year old gpu with stock drivers from alienware. which they never updated. -
Im playing STO on a acer 5920g with an ati hd 3470. It's a really poor card a the game looks shockingly bad so I'm thinking of upgrading my card.
Apparently the best upgrades for the 5920g are the hd 3650 and the Nvidia 9500M GS.
Can anyone suggest which of the two would be better for getting the most out of STO?
Cheers -
I haven't seen many systems that have not been able to play this game on high and I'm not just talking about monster system. -
if you want the latest driver download ati mobility modder from driverheaven.net then download 9.12 catalyst from ati, mod them, install
