These games really seemed like alot of fun to me... I purchased both 1 and 2... but I just could never really "get into" the gameplay. There seemed to be alot of depth to the storyline and gameplay... but it was just a little too slow paced for me.

Did any of you guys feel the same way about these games?

I was too enthralled in the story line to notice any flaws. :D

Both are among the best games ever!
But the story does get a bit complex/deep/boring sometimes. Otherwise it's damn near perfect.

A few of the best games ever. Now if only they could get rid of the load times.

well that might have happened had they not made the most stupid move ever and not finish the story line, but bring out an MMO, that really pissed me off.

I read and heard alot of good things about KOTOR and I bought it even though I never got into the Star Wars universe and didn't care for any of the movies. And I have to say I was very disappointed with it. Like you said, I hated the combat in the game and quit playing after a week or so. 2 years later I decided to give it another shot and this time I made it about 10 hrs into the game before I gave up again because of the crappy combat. Truth is its a Bioware game and I hate them all. Every time Bioware comes out with a game it gets rave reviews and every time I get suckered in and buy it (this happened with the original Baldur's Gate also, rave reviews and crappy combat). I have yet to find one I could get even halfway through because of the combat although I thought Jade Empire was the best.

I liked both, however they should have just waited and polished the ending on the second one instead of rushing it out.

nofxman, you're definitely on to something. Bioware places a lot of emphasis on the aspects of gameplay typical gamers don't normally value very highly. They spend a lot of time creating outstanding dialogue systems, brilliant stories and character development, enthralling and innovative worlds and missions, but when you get right down to the nitty gritty basics of combat, they often skimp.

In order to enjoy KotOR, you really have to be willing to immerse yourself in the story and characters. Nobody should play this game for an intense, action-packed combat system. In fact, anyone looking for entertaining and creative battle systems probably shouldn't be looking at the RPG genre at all.

I, for one, regard KotOR as one of the best RPGs of all time, and I still play through it at least once a year. It's easily on my all-time top 5 list. The only reason I'm hesitant to name it king, in fact, is Mass Effect, which did everything KotOR was doing, but better. I'm still waiting to see how the ME sequels pan out.

On the other hand, I was terribly, terribly disappointed with KotOR II. The story seemed to just fall apart, and as soon as I lost interest in the story, my attention shifted to the B-grade combat system, so I got frustrated and bored. I finished the game, but will not recommend the game to anyone else. Sophomore flop.

I liked both KotORs because of the very good stories. The stories were so good that I was able to overlook the combat, which was easy (even on hard) imho. The first KotOR was best overall because it was more polished, but the second one just felt grittier and more appealing. I think if Obsidian were given more time to work on KotOR II, it would have easily surpassed KotOR I.

if you're looking for great and deep combat then you should stay away from bioware and get yourself something like Ninja gaiden or Devil may cry!....
Bioware have never been world famous for making great combat systems...people buy their games because they come with great storylines, i've played most of their games(BG2, KOTOR, Jade Empire and mass effect) and was never disappointed by any of them in terms of story and characters..if i want to get my action or combat fix i go play something like ninja gaiden or gears of war! and believe me they feature lame and terrible stories but then again that's not why people play them!.......so as you see it's kind of trade off, i think it's wrong to expect a game to have everything..

Im trying out KotOR soon as I get a copy, I would imagine that if the combat aspect was the only part you didnt like that the new game from them Mass Effect would be more appealing. Having both a better combat system and a good story.

I like starwars tho so I think I will like KotOR more.

Kotor 1 was just awsome. The storyline is one of the best video game story lines I have seen. I am part way through KOTR 2, so can't really comment on that game yet until I finally finish it.

Its boring from the start for me thats for sure, and my fps sucks all considering.

I went to widescreengamingforum.com and got the hacks. Its much better now in 1920x1080 than it was 1280x1040

I guess I just need to take the time to read the manual and do some research and it will be better, just hoping into it didnt work so well. Lots of item collecting lol.

I may skip KotOR and go straight to Mass Effect.

that start is slow, give it a little time on Taris and it gets a bit more interesting. Once your off Taris though it gets worlds better, trust me

should you do that you'll lose really great piece of gaming spectrum available. as others already said - the game is mostly plot oriented, not combat oriented :D however there are quite a few places further in the game where the fights are rather intensive...

but still, if you're looking for somewhat more combat oriented "rpg" there's always "doomed" Dark Messiah of MM (more of a fantasy Doom than a true rpg), "side-quested" Oblivion (thieves' and assassins' guilds offer further in their respective subplots quite a lot of action), "diablo-like" TitanQuest (for everyone who loves both the Hercules and Xena TV series), "funny" Bard's Tale, a bit "cinematic" Witcher, "crappy" Fable or DungeonSieges... there's a lot of titles out there... yet the plot in kotors (especially in 1st installment) is really good and worthy of getting yourself acquainted with it.

one thing i don't like about Mass Effect is its side quests and maps, everything is identical, almost all of the quests involves you to go to a spaceship or a mine or something to kill someone or get something after killing someone, and the maps all look the same. and looking for minerals and stuff are the most boring quests i have ever seen b4. but of course the main story line, facial animation and the combat system is one of the best out there.

I was never into KOTOR's gameplay, so I just used artmoney and make a extremely strong character to bypass the fight :p . But the story is just brilliant, that's the only thing keep me interested.

Remember, KOTOR is an RPG. That its combat system is somewhat more action-oriented than most other RPGs should be considered a bonus.

    Awesome game, I loved it.

yeah I get what you are saying. I played through KOTOR and enjoyed it, however I really never felt like playing 2 aswell. These games, like Mass Effect are really slowpaced and not everyone is able to cope with that. Also, i never liked any combat system bioware implemented in their games, whether Jade empire or any other of their RPG's
