Yes, Bioware is developing their first MMO, called Star Wars: The Old Republic. If you know anything about the The Old Republic franchise, you already know that it has a very long, and rich history behind it. The games that this MMO is based off of, specifically KOTOR I and KOTOR II, are extremely well polished, immersive, and very fun to play with tons of creative content.
Anyway, after a long wait, Bioware has finally released their first gameplay trailer including supporting dialogue about the MMO by Muzyka and company. Check it out!

Three words. I WANT THIS!
-
I'm a bit bummed for the reason that it's probably going to be pay-to-play which isn't the type of game I invest in
-
I agree. I'd like it to be a single player RPG, or guild wars type: buy the game, play forever.
-
Whats MMO?
Still I hope Star Wars games will never stop being made. -
MMO = Massively Multiplayer Online (Game)
-
^ What he said
Normally, MMOs have a pay-to-play policy i.e. they charge you monthly to help fund their servers or the new content(ex: WoW). There are of course free MMOs though, but in majority, the paying ones are per month. -
However, the development costs to produce a quality MMO are extraordinary... on the order of millions of dollars. I'd rather pay a monthly fee to have an excellent online gaming experience than not to see studios develop MMO's at all. -
Well, pay-to-play or not; I want this game!
My anticipation has skyrocketed from that vid. -
I'm more interested in what and how they're going to do the things that actually necessitate this to be an MMO.
-
Footage does look very nice, but like some of the others here, i would love to see it as a single player rpg, i just cant see myself paying a monthly fee for a game ive paid for already.
-
I understand the idea behind a monthly fee, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying that's not my type. I'm not the type of person/gamer to play that often(it's more of a sporadic thing with me lol
) and if I was paying a monthly fee, I'd feel that some months I wouldn't be getting my money's worth. I also know that on some companies if you stop paying, they erase your account so that means I couldn't stop playing for say 6 months and come back to my character in those types of games.
That being said, I'll still be interested as to how they pull this off. I liked the KotOR series, but I really enjoyed the storyline and character development, which will probably be lesser if it turns into an MMO. -
And I think people are misunderstanding the intent of this MMO. Star Wars: The Old Republic is a new game from the ground up. Bioware is not simply rehashing what they did in the KOTOR series. They are making this game based on the KOTOR timeline (couple thousand years before Darth Vader) but that's it. They aren't recycling characters, quests, content, etc. found in the original KOTOR games.
This MMO couldn't be produced and developed by a better company than Bioware. We all know that Bioware does not release shoddy games; they release games when they're ready to, and not a minute earlier. I have complete confidence in Bioware making SWTOR a success.
In any event, their track record in developing games is second to none, and quite frankly, no one does RPG computer games better than they do. Since this game is based on a MMO RPG, I think we all know that Bioware is on the ball and will not dissapoint. -
PC Gamer's new issue has this as their cover story. It's about 6 pages in length with lots of pretty glossy pictures. This game may FINALLY bring me into the online world of gaming...of course I said that about Galaxies and it didn't happen
-
Intriguing.
Oh, I was already aware of the game and all (just like a lot of other people here) ... though this footage is interesting.
Given the fact Bioware is doing this, there is a good possibility the game will turn out great.
I'm not exactly a fan of SW (Star Trek is my love).
The only SW games I truly enjoyed were KOTOR I and II.
The downside is the probable pay-per month in order to play.
I'm not an online gamer, but there's a possibility I will try this out along with the Star Trek online when it comes out.
Whether or not I will like the games enough to continue paying/playing is another matter. -
It will probably be a great game which i probably will not play purely because of the monthly payment thing. For one, I don't particularly have a lot of time to spend just gaming.
What would be laudable is if they could release the game and gave the option to let people play it as a solo RPG if they wanted. That would be ideal. -
monthly fees are normal for MMORPGS the MMORPGS that does not have it r crappy free asian games. If you want quality you have to pay for it just like with WOW and if u dont u can have fun with horrible Korean MMORPGS with no content at all and just a waste of lifetime.
I am glad we dont get a new SP KOTOR this looks much more interesting, i hope they make it good as Galaxies used to be. -
When did this become a discussion about monthly fees?
I merely do not like monthly fees. I dislike MMOs(free and paying) as well so obviously a monthly fee MMO will not be my cup of cake. Many single player games are one-time purchase and I find them very enjoyable. I like to play a game at my own pace and an MMO style game rarely allows this type of gameplay. -
Did anyone see any elves in the game clips? I didn't see any. What kind of mmo is this if there are no elves???
