yes the old starcraft, its been out for years and people still play it all the time including me. anyone else in here play starcraft? it is my first GAME i EVER played on pc and its been the best in my opinion. sure there are several other strategy games that are really addicting but nothing can beat the old starcraft. agree?

Man, its such an insanely popular game and I still haven't played it yet, I feel so stupid. I'm surprised they didn't make a sequel, why didn't they? Blizzard would make boatloads of cash.

They ARE FINALLY making a sequal. But instead of the current game style of starcraft it is switching to a first person shooter where you take on the role of a terran ghost.

At the moment, Starcraft is making a comeback amoung my friends. Just in time for christmas break. Now we have something to do. Starcraft is so awesome. I can beat starcraft in less then a week now, but i still can't finish broodwar. The zerg chapter just kills me so fast.

I am the only person you'll probably ever meet that actually despises the game, especially the online part.

Rise of Nations is so much better.

Starcraft Ghost isn't a sequel to starcraft, but rather a spinoff. Also, it will only be released on consoles and not the PC afaik.

Well, its still following after the storyline of broodwar. That sucks tho that it is only xbox and ps2. I was kinda looking forward to it, but it would have to be on the compuer for me.

Yeah, I guess, but I want them to make StarCraft 2. That would be freaking amazing. I was, and am still quite impressed with Warcraft 3 and the FT expansion.

I'm currently playing Starcraft on my Mac iBook right now.

As for Starcraft 2, how can you improve on the perfect balance in the original Starcraft? It's going to hard to follow up.

Starcraft 2 could go with more micromanagement like with Warcraft III.

I really dislike Warcraft III since it was so heavy micromangement.

I want to create an army of 100 men like in Starcraft not 10 men in Warcraft III!

in short, no. you're wrong. :)

+ all those pathetic RTS knock-offs out there have a long way from being Strategy games
+ if Starcraft was your first game, you're probably not qualified to proclaim it the best ever to begin with

++Starcraft... a pathetic rts knock off? No my dear friend, you have it wrong. Starcraft defined what an RTS should be.

++It is possible that someone could play his/her first game and then judge all others by it. My first pc game was Lego Island, yet I still find Starcraft to be my overall "best times had while playing" game. It's all a matter of opinion, but I agree with him in saying that Starcraft is indeed one of the best games out there.

(P.S. Please try and have a little more tolerance. You seem to put anything down if you don't particularly like it. Please try to be more accepting of the fact that others may disagree with you, or perhaps enjoy certain games/browsers/etc. that you may not enjoy.)

I love WC3 better. When you have a high level hero with a few right units, you can beat bunch of opponent's army.
IN Starcraft, you just have to mass units to win.

Griff... sorry, I didn't realize that this was a post-if-you-agree-only thread  I guess I must have gotten confused at that part where he asked if we agree or not...

right... long story short: Dune2 -> C&C ... and that's where it should have ended. SC might have been the best in the first wave of copycats but - anywhoo...

soooo... let me see if I'm getting this one right: you disagree with me disagreeing with the guy, and you're saying that I can't disagree with others but should be accepting of others not agreeing with me. I think we will all agree that the irony of this is completely lost on you

    Total Annihilation
    Starcraft
    Homeworld (1 & 2)

Those are my 3 favorite strategy games of all time. But, The only 2 (3) that stay installed on my systems at all times are TA, and HW 1&2. Every machine I own has them on it. Rise of Nations is incredibly well done, and I have to agree that it does totally kick ass. The big game I'm waiting for? Supreme Commander. The exact same team that comprised Cavedog Entertainment now comprises Gas Powered Games. Supreme Commander is the spiritual successor to Total Annihilation. :) Check those out if you have played any of them :) If you like strategy games, you'll like these games.

I would say that Starcraft defined what NOT to do in an RTS. There were a lot of good things the game did, but it was horribly unbalanced and the way most people (online at least) played was to follow:

    "Player's handbook:

    Subject - Way to Win

    1) Play as Protoss. Build 200 carriers. Rush enemy."

Game over. However, I would like to say that the game did some things right too, but it always seemed to play out the same way. C&C, C&C Red Alert, and C&C RA2 (TS and Gen.s excluded and bad) I thought fixed this flaw since it didn't require truckloads of units to take down a single building. There were alternatives to rushing. In Starcraft the only side to have alternatives was the Terrans, but when everyone is playing Protoss you really don't stand a chance.

I really don't know where to put Rise of Nations though. It's great in so many ways yet lacking in others. I don't seem to recognize it as a traditional RTS game since it gets so fast paced later on.

First of all I'd like to say, Warcraft 3 was one of the worst games I've ever played for online competition. Every game is monotonous at best. The hero system just doesn't work for a RTS game and the rest of the game is lacking all the strategy and innovation that made Warcraft 2 one of the best RTS's ever.

For hardcore RTS players, Starcraft was probably not acceptible, but in contrast to games such as command and conquer, or even TA, Starcraft was excellent for everyone else. Starcraft had excellent graphics, fast paced gameplay, creative maps, and although at many times it seemed that one race outbalanced another, I could always find a new strategy to combat the latest "rush" technique. In addition to that, people looking for games like that usually ended up in games like that. If you were looking for a long term strategy type game you could find one if you just looked in the right area.

If anything, I think the expansions to Starcraft were the closest thing to breaking the games balance.

I would love to see a Starcraft 2! My worse fear is asking for Starcraft 2 and getting Warcraft 3 in space...

I concur, Any Warcraft in space is going to ruin the Starcraft feel. I too personally hated the hero system, it was actually better executed in Warlords Battlecry 3, interesting game, but far from being a great game. I stick to my current favorites of TA, HW, and RoN. Dawn of War, the other extremely well done Relic Entertainment game is sweet, but recently was having issues with ATI cards... all of them. I haven't played since the last time I was having trouble with it (been a couple of months now). Hopefully someone solved this issue. But there are plenty of great games out there and I have to say that Starcraft is one of them. It's not THE greatest, but its on the top 10 list for sure.

Edit: The way I play with Protoss is to AVOID building carriers, too easily taken down by a good Terran player with Battlecruiser/Goliath combo totally stomps the Cruiser rush. Zerg all they need is the Devourer/Guardian combo to beat just about anyone. True, there are better strategies, but to counter the Carrier rush, those are the units you need. That's why I don't do Carrier rushes, they are expensive, and too hard to micro-manage. Enter the Scout Ship and Dragoon combo strategies :) Personal favorite that I worked up and follow myself :) Scouts are cheaper and the Antimatter Rockets do 10 times the damage of a Carrier drone, fire faster, and in large groups do massive damage. Dragoons come in to keep ground troops under supressive fire and keep them moving while Scouts munch on their armor. Trust me, it works. :)

ZXeno, that strategy is totally old school, I love it! That is what I used to do back in highschool, oh, 6 years ago or so. Dragoon and Scout ship rush's all the way! I just can't get used to the new expansion pack though...

It has been sooo long since I have played TA, but that game is classic. I'm excited to see how the latest sequel turns out.

I haven't played in a long time. I lost my copies (yes, I had multiple, one for every machine, all 4) so I think that I'm going to head to walmart tonight and get a couple of copies for my notebook and desktop. We'll have to play some time, it's been so long! I don't even remember the last time I played!

Ha, maybe I'll have to go do that too! I myself have owned multiple copies of the game. I probably won't be doing much online gaming till after the holidays though, as soon as I figure out which laptop I want to pick up, God help me! =0)

you could just put it on your multiple machines, you just can't use more then one online on battlenet at one time thanks to the key checker of battlenet.

I am considering a Sager, but I'm trying to figure out whether there is really and advantage over getting a Sager vs. HP or Dell.

You certainly don't need a top of the line notebook to play Starcraft though! =oP I think the cheapest brand new E-machine lap could probably play that game like it were top of the line!

    Oh God,

Please, don't take this as a recommendation to buy an E-machine!!! I don't think they make worse... *think* is the key word here...
