I stopped by my local trusty EBGames today to see if I could put a deposit down on a SC2 CE version. EBG Dude told me that while the game is still tentitavely being released in early '09 they had no details on the CE yet. Apparently with Blizzard's acquisition by Activision, the SKU model for SC2 is to split it up into a trilogy. The Terran edition will be released first. Then followed buy the Protoss edition a year later. Then maybe, just maybe, a Zerg edition will be released 4 or 5 years later. EBG Dude described as a pathetic money grabbing scheme by Activision. I agree. So CE info is sketchy at best and while it is still on my radar to possibly buy I am no longer in 'hype mode' for it.![]()

...That's the worst news I've heard yet... and that even sounds totally plausible despite being retarded. >_<
-
will the 3 parts be priced at a full game price? 50-60 range?
-
Well... regardless... this'll only make people angry, but you can bet that just as many people will still buy it. Blizzard likely laces all their products with highly addictive substances. >_>
-
Exactly what EA would do to up the best gaming company.
RIP Blizzard, you were the best. -
....people didn't know this already? Its kinda old news.
-
Lol, old news...welcome to october 10th, btw. As I've said, it certainly seem's like a bit of a "milk", but I'll be buying them.
-
Blizzard has already confirmed they will release ALL three (two will be expansions)... they just don't know when yet.
I can't quite figure out how they're going to handle splitting the SC community into such a fractured environment. Each expansion is going to add new units/content but how do you manage compatibility? -
Starcraft: Ghost.
I really wish they'd give themselves a release date, cause I'm still betting that WoW 5000, WC10000, and Diablo 52622 get released before SC2 ever will. XD -
All of the SC2 versions will be full length games, the online play will allow full use of all the units of all the factions. I believe the Terran version (first one being released) is going to have 32 campaign missions.
-
This isn't exactly new news.
Each version is touted as having a very lengthy unique campaign, but they will all have the full multiplayer component.
Since multiplayer is 80% of the reason I want this game, I'll just get the Terran version, it'll probably be the best campaign anyways. -
SC2 better be epic or bust.
-
Starcraft 2 had better be fanfrickintastic after waiting 43 years!!
-
According to our memos at my store (I work at Game Crazy) The games are gonna run $49.99. So yea, that $150 dollars down the tube for me...if it ever comes out
-
Or Korea will burn to the ground...
-
SC2 is on preoder I believe on Bestbuy since July, and still no official release date
XD
HAHHAHAHAHAHHA
I dont think it will be out on February, have you read on battle.net the Q&A by Karune? Much balance and units are still on questions. -
... I think I puked a little in my mouth. The person who thought about this money grabbing scheme deserve to be stoned(not to death tho)...
-
Some Korean pros have already complained about it.
-
ive heard this before. good thing i dont play rts'. i still think its a rip though
-
i wonder how much it will cost.

Think like a gaming acquisition company executive would. Customers are irrelevant. Big franchises that make lots of money are what's important. Splitting your customers up into different compatibility segments is an afterthought. It's all about the money, sadly.
I bought Starcraft but never liked it. I won't be buying Starcraft 2. For some reason, I'd rather play a C&C game than Starcraft (or Warhammer). I seem to have quite an aversion to the art style and balancing in those games. -
This shocked me! ... 2 months ago.
-
Well it was news to me and obviously several others here and elsewhere. Sorry for posting 'old' news.
-
I think this will be a bust. Who will buy the other single player campaigns a year or more down the road? Most expansion packs add new units, abilities, and overall changes, but sounds like this is just a campaign mission pack.
Brood War at least added some units and changed the overall multiplayer strategy too. -
I would take this as a grain of salt... this guy has NOT posted a link and is only typing.
3 games out of one, I'm fine with it -
>.> He doesn't need to post a link, it was officially announced at Blizzcon 2008. I suppose he was right some people really didn't know, but if you don't believe me here you go

Are you sure it states that each segment will be released in year segments?
-
i'd say more than a year is likely given Blizzards propensity for taking bloody forever with games. But certainly Blizzard's not going to put them all out in quick rapid fire.
I dunno how many people are gonna actually play through all 100 missions SCII will eventually have but it's exceedingly annoying that one is expected to cough up $150 just to be able to keep playing online. -
Not sure if having such long campaigns is such a good idea. 100 missions is a lot, ifthey decide to put 33 missions per campaign/game (not a fact, just assuming here.
). I sorta liked the size of campaigns that SC and WC3 had. They were streched out enough to follow good story line without losing the interest of players.
-
I don't understand how they can't have a campaign for each faction completed within the next year. Most of the time they spend on balancing units and abilities. This could be developed in parallel with FMV sequences and storyline. Once the game is set, just set up the maps and units required fro that mission, and away you go!
-
Funnily enough I posted this in another topic labelled "Old News, Starcraft Split Into 3 Games..." That was already old when I posted it a month ago.
-
Well I personally only care about the multiplayer. I don't even think I'll be playing the single player, and if I do, then It'll only be once, then off to the multiplayer every other time I load up the game. This is still pretty stupid though, if they want to make a trilogy, then ok, let them, but splitting up the games into different races is just stupid. Mabe some people don't like the terran, I know I personally liked playing as zerg, and having to wait years for the zerg version to come out is just stupid.
-
I thought my friend was BSing me when he told me this.
When does Diablo III come out?
Or are they going to F that one up too? -
well that's the thing. They're not going with such a simple approach as that. They're going pretty much all-out in making the best single-player experience.

This must be an old topic as we knew forever ago that it was going to be a trilogy.
Plus its not like they are spliting one game into 3, its 3 seperate huge games. Did anbydoy look at Half Life and Half Life 2 as a split game and get angry?
Doom, Doom2, Doom3? Many games have sequels and divisions. Blizzard is dedicated to quality and they made such a big and great game its just not possible or plausible to have it all out at one time. -
Well, it is a fairly new topic because the OP didn't know the horrible truth till recently.
And no, its not the same as HL, HL2 or Doom, Doom 2, Doom 3, etc. What Blizzard is doing is taking the exact same engine, adding a few units and a massive campaign and calling it a full game (with a full price) rather than an expansion.
I don't know whether Blizzard actually cares about the missions but they do know that a lot of people play online and to keep playing online, they'll need to cough up even more.
People would've been less pissed if Blizzard just published expansions (if with fewer missions... 100 missions is overkill however good the story is) -
I wonder how much it will cost.

LOL, and last time I checked thats exactly what all the half life games were like. Except you can play through half life and all its story in hours while each one of the Starcraft games are going to have countless hours of gameplay & lore/story.
If you just want multi you only need one game, the trilogy is for the one player. -
Hmm... I know HL2 they split it up into chapters but each chapter is considered an expansion.
That's the whole thing. You'll almost definitely need to buy the trilogy to keep playing online. Sure they'll provide rooms for each chapter but with the subsequent releases, people will abandon the rooms of the previous versions. Something as simple as adding units would automatically make online play between different parts of the trilogy impossible.
That said, i don't know that for sure but I cannot see blizzard doing it differently. I doubt that many ppl will actually play starcraft II for its missions (all 100 of them) -
Meh, this is nothing new, THQ/Relic have been doing the same thing with the Dawn of War series since day one, 3-4 years ago.
Lets face it, games companies these days want to get as much money over as long a period of time as possible, for what basically amount to jack all.
The "expansions" on Dawn of War alone were already virtually done and dusted by the modding community by the time Dawn of War Winter Assault (expansion 1) came out, and the modding community don't charge £20 a go for a mod... -
Very lame, hopefully it will be some amazing story.

Im pretty sure Bliz already said any of the 3 games gives you full online. So if thats what your complaining about I would hold thy tongue for now until you really have a valid complaint.

Dawn of War?
Who the hell cares about that??? -
Money making schemes FTW!
