Hey folks, since I haven't really seen anyone talk about it much on here, I thought I'd just give a heads-up about Starcraft 2 being playable this past weekend at BlizzCon in Anaheim, CA. They had like 60 terminals set up for people to demo the game! It took place yesterday and today and it looks like it's just about to wrap up. Was anyone here lucky enough to get out there? Wow I wish I lived out West. Instead, I've had to read up on updates and drool at the same time.

So for those of us who rank Starcraft in our top 2-3 games of all-time, below are are some links with some pretty detailed info about SC2. Note that I am in no way affiliated with any of those sites, just a guy who spent more time on Battle.net back in the day that he should admit! Do we have a lot of Starcraft fans out there in these forums? I can't wait for the game! Too bad it's probably not going to be out for another year (I'm thinking Fall 2008). Anyway, here's the links, enjoy:

Looking forward to it too! I'm trying to beat the original now actually...haha. I am a few missions from completing the expansion.

SC2 looks quite polished huh? It should definitely be out within a year.

^^^ You're just now playing single player in the original? Where've ya been the past 9 yrs! ;)

Yeah, supposedly Blizzard's been working on SC2 since 2003 (!), but they delayed making the announcement until 5/07 - they did the same thing with Warcraft III. Which is pretty cool in a way, because now we don't have to salivate for years; hopefully just one more!

d3sdichad0, I love the Diablo series as well. I read an interview where they said that nothing's been made official but that they will revisit that world in the future. To me, the translation is that they already have people working on D3 as well!

BTW, my estimate for SC2's Fall 2008 release date is trying to take into account the famous Blizzard delays and not releasing a game "until it's ready" - which I prefer anyway, as opposed to buggy messes that some companies rush out. Anyway, originally there were rumors that it'd be out by the end of this year, but they've definitely said that this is not true. Some people are saying Q1 2008, but I'm trying to be more conservative (realistic?) in my estimate. It *is* possible that it'll be out in less than 1 year... but I doubt it.

IIIM3, hey don't shoot the messenger! :) That's what I thought about those website reports! But it's a good thing...

There must be one person who was able to Ghost the HDD that had the starcraft 2 data files. ;)

Can't wait to play the demo if it is ever released.

^^^ Yeah, I'd heard about the Fall 07 to Q1 08, but again, just going by their track record my prediction is Fall 08 after all is said and done. I mean, right now they're still developing and finishing up the game. The Beta's still a way's off. But I don't mind. I have no doubt the finished product will be stellar (no pressure on them or anything, lol).

Either way, I'm feeling Blizz will delay it at least once more, they're known to do that. However, the end product will always, and always will, be a best seller.

^^^ Lol, yeah, isn't that unbelievable how Korea got so hooked on SC - even more than the US! It's amazing how many tournaments, conventions, products have resulted. I saw some news report awhile back where people there were dressing up, buying Korea-only SC-branded products, going to monthly (!) conventions, etc... I can't even imagine the worldwide fervor that SC 2 is going to generate.

Happyfunball, im as big or maybe even a bigger fan of the starcraft series than you are. I'm 18 now, and ive played that game for about 8 yrs. Maybe it's cause i'm half korean or something, but i love the game. I'm so looking forward to SC2, man the multiplayer on that is gonna pwn, i'm a little curious too to see how the story goes. I hope the game will run on my Inspiron 1720 8600, I only can pray, lol. If it doesn't SC2 might be worth getting a new comp completely just to play the bad boy

Some people from my church went and were talking to me about blizzcon. But the girl I was talking to was more interested in WoW and music that was happening there. I actually asked her about SC2, but she said she didn't really look at it or hear anything about it. Her sister just married a guy who is one of the supervisors over in Irvine at Blizzard for the tech support department. That can't be a fun job, having to deal with cranky WoW players all day..... I shudder to think about the hours on hours he spends talking to people who are borderline suicidal because they can not get their fix.
I'll ask him if he knows anything about SC2 next time I see him.

ILuvAsians89, let's not get into who's 'bigger', lol. I've played it since it originally came out as well. I'm sure that it'll run on those specs. Blizzard has always been great at not requiring high system specs for its games. Hell, I'm getting my current system partly to be ready for new games, mostly SC2.

Unfortunately, the game won't be hero centered like WC3. It is more about making freakin huge army and clashing it with another. This is what i know, at least from what i read.

And thats why I'm looking forward to wc4 more ^ ^. starcraft was never deep enough for me.

wc3 had balance issues for the first 1.5 years of release so thats why a lot of people didn't like it but once it got balanced it was way more deep strategy-wise then anyother RTS game.

You know I never did like the whole having a hero during melee play anyway. What I did read was that after a certain amount of kills the unit would gain some kind of veteran status, which is a neat feature. Anyone ever play Red Alert 2? cuz they had that same thing, so now when your unit kills 255 things, it'll be better than a newly made unit. Oh man SC2 is so exciting

Yay! More Starcraft fans coming out of the woodwork!

Ok, I gotta call ya on this one. I don't think there's any way that you can say WC3 or any other RTS game for that matter was "way more deep" than Starcraft. SC + Brood War is right up there. If anyone doesn't think so, then they haven't spent enough time with it on Battle.net. WC3 was BASED on the balance model of Starcraft (rock, paper, scissors) and even copied stuff like creep, heroes, and other stuff. Obviously it improved in some areas, - I mean it's Warcraft THREE and came out 3-4 years after SC. But I still think that Starcraft did some things better than WC3, and to me it's a better overall experience. And I don't care that the graphics aren't as good (and in fact they still hold quite a bit of charm).

I also read about SC2 not having hero units, but I don't believe it. They have to have some hero units. Starcraft was among the original RTS' that created the idea of hero units.

Starcraft was based on wc2. :)

But anyways I just think there was more depth in wc3. Creeps/Items/Heroes/Shops/Unit Abilities/Mercenaries added a lot, not to mention there were four races.

^^^ Knew you were going to bring up WC2. ;) Certainly it's true b/c it came before Starcraft, but Starcraft is revolutionary b/c of the 3 distinct races and how they balanced it, plus how they used heroes and the storyline. It's so much more advanced that it's not close. WC3 on the other hand did not have as revolutionary an advance from Starcraft - relatively speaking.

Of course I agree that there is more depth in WC3, I just had an issue with the contention that it's leaps-and-bounds over Starcraft. And again, if you don't think that Starcraft is deep enough for you, try Brood War on battle.net or just the single player.

On a sidenote (I'm hijacking my own thread!), one might argue that WC3's implementation of heroes, shops, mercenaries, and items was copied from the Warlords Battlecry series. Anyone play that those games? WBC3 has approximately 18 races. But of course they're not quite as distinct as in WC3. Anyway, AMAZING games. I think that WBC2 is the best one in that series.

Starcraft 2 gameplay won't be the same as WC3... mainly because it doesn't have a 75 unit limit... nothing beats 300 zerglings.... and I read Havok engine :)

I hated the WCIII heroes, a lvl 7-10 hero could take on an WCIII army and kill them all I just had armies as cannon fodder...

And we won't be seeing a Diablo III anytime soon, the makers of DII are the guys on Mythos and Hellgate: London

and about the biggest fan... I actually got fat playing this ;)

^^^ Wreak Havok!! The engine looks great in the screenshots I've seen. I hope that SC2 only has hero usage in single-player and that's it. But perhaps doubtful. And glad there won't be that unit cap.

Definitely no D3 soon, but it's on the horizon according to Rob Pardo.

Hey folks, just an update: I was at GenCon last weekend and got to take an up-close and personal look at Starcraft 2 at the Blizzard booth... I didn't play b/c the line was very long and time was short. WOW! Besides the amazing graphics, it seems like they've upgraded every existing unit, plus changed out at least 1/2 of the units. This is really going to affect a lot of the existing strategies out there. Gonna be a great one!

I'm not yet excited... I was hoping for a complete redesign. I wouldn't be annoyed if they ignored the current RTS trends with squads, cover, and commander powers/units because I love the original gameplay but the same units???

Give me a thousand years in the future with completely different units, races, mixtures of existing races/technology, and buildings that don't look like their SC1 versions.

I love the previews and how the game looks in 3D with a movable camera, however, I'm still not quite sure if I'll even be able to play it so I'm trying not to get too worked up...

I think you can relax, there are some units that remain (dark templar, zealot, marines, zerglings, etc.) but they are modified enough with new abilities, that it no longer matters if they have the same names, they play totally different due to the new abilities. For all intended purposes Starcraft 2 is a different game from the original, many new units, redesigned old units, new "abilities" for buildings (terran fortress, depots that can be lowered to allow the passage of your troops, phase prism, re-deployable protoss turrets, etc.). Too bad is going to take another year or so to get the actual game :(
