I'm thinking about buying starcraft 2 because I was a huge fan of the first. I'm going to love single player, but probably not the ladder multiplayer. I know there's custom games, but are they as fun and amazing as the ones from starcraft 1 were?

The single player isn't as good as SC1's (but its still good). As for custom games go there pretty darn awesome. Give people time and they will create the best maps ever seen in an RTS (hell theres already some amazing ones).

There's nothing good out - yet. Most of the custom games are buggy, unbalanced, over-simplified, boring, and entirely unworthy of your attention.
But give it time. SC2 has a powerful map making tool. Someone made a rudimentary "rpg-type" game complete with an inventory bag and equipped slots, and skills that level up (though the tooltips for these skills are entirely uninformative).
I imagine that what we will see is a greater variety of higher-quality maps than ever showed up on WC3, minus the "DotA"-types (formerly known as AoS-type, but you young folks probably wouldn't know what I'm talking about - that was DotA made for SC1). DotA is already so well-entrenched in WC3, plus several independent games such as League of Legends or Heroes of Newerth or Demigod (some of these are even free), that I doubt it will become as super-popular on SC2. However, there is already a map of that style up in the custom game list. -

I do not remember WC3 having awesome maps in the first month it was out. I expect 3+ months to see some good stuff roll out. Thats not much to ask for, we have multi player, single player, and the ok custom games to hold us over if all your interested is the better soon to come custom games.
I just got gold on all the challenges today that felt like a good accomplishment and was a good use of time. -

Defense games are probably the most common (they're so darn easy to make!), and also probably the most refined. There are probably about 5-6 of them of varying levels of quality and balance.
The third-person shooters and beat-em-ups exist, but they're nigh unplayable because of severe input lag. I'm expecting these will be fixed up by an update from Blizzard, but some might claim I'm being too optimistic. In time, we will see. -
Well I'm forced to buy it now. I was looking on ebay at the collector's edition and accidentally hit commit to buy. Soooo... now I have SCII collectors edition (not that I'm complaining) I might sell the additional parts from the CE for very low prices (except the USB dog tag, that's mine
). And I'm gonna have 3 guest passes to give away for SCII and 2 10-day WoW trials, if anyone wants to claim those now for free

Im still hopping someone makes some of the old lord of the rings and troy custom games...they were the best

there's a built in 150 ms lag for some reason (it was around that much for old battle.net but whatever) -
It definitely seems like most of the CGs are some type of defense game. I have seen a few games like SC Ghost that look promising but that slight delay just kills it.
I still haven't come across ANY mazes (or bounds as they are referred to in SC). I'm not talking about games like runling run I mean something like ice escape on frozen throne. -
I want a wintermaul type game

I would make a map but it looks so complicated and I just don't think I have the time and patience to complete it.
