So I'm currently in Korea for my year abroad as part of my university degree - I'm moving onto Japan next month where I will be spending 12 months at a university there.
I had no idea that the servers for SC2 would be region locked and now am somewhat wary of buying the game as I'd probably opt for the European version (despite the hefty £45 price tag...) so I can play it on my return to the UK.
I'm assuming that there's offline skirmish against the AI at least? I'm new to Starcraft so wouldn't likely be jumping into multplayer straight away and was wondering whether the offline options (if the AI provides a decent challenge on higher difficulties and the campaign) is worth it.

AFAIK SEA versions can play against USA players. BUT that is the only region lock that got changed and i dont know why they allowed it.
Maybe they might also change the region lock when servers are already tested. -
So if I bought the US version (which is cheaper taking currency conversion into account), I would be able to play online while I was in Japan?
If so, that's likely the route I'll take. I'll probably get bored of this game after 12 months anyway (I get tired of multiplayer games pretty fast, regardless of how good or addicting they are). -

you'll be able to play online wherever you are.
you'll just be playing on the US servers or whatever. so there may be some lag -

StarCraft-SEA: North American Server Access for Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Players FAQ | Facebook
I personally havent bought it yet but i will buy it. -
Yeah, being able to use the U.S. servers in Australia may be enough for me to buy this game. Definitely not at the Blizzard's direct download price of A$90, but at A$70 as at DSE I'm considering it.
I hate the lack of LAN functionality, proper chat features, and Blizzard's monopoly on competitive play, but those features aren't really going to affect me much, whereas the region issues would've been a big no-no for me. -
Ah, I see.
Was under the impression I'd be locked out of that feature if my current ISP address didn't match up with the version of the game I'd bought.
Well, since I will be in Japan for a year... probably best to go for the Noth Amerca/Asia serves then I guess.
Thanks for the help guys (it also saves me around £7 on the European price which is a nice bonus)!
EDIT: Q: If I have already purchased the North American version, can I also play on the Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand servers?
A: No. To have the option to play on both servers, you must purchase the Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand version of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. This solution is specifically targeted to address gamers in Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand who have social relationships with North American players from previous Blizzard Entertainment titles.
........ah hell. -

Yup SEA version costs $70, soooo better start saving a bit more BUT at least you have the ability to play in 2 regions.
Missed preordering a standard edition that comes with a tshirt and the USB dog tag
Didnt have enough money. -
If i'm in the USA will I be able to download the EU game and play with my friends in Europe? On the beta you simply needed to change the sc2.base file with the one from someone in europe to play with them. I've tried it with the actual game and it doesn't work because of the language pack. So then I tried changing the EN.USA file with the EN.GB file and still doesn't work. If anyone has found the solution I would really really appreciate it!

you have to buy the EU version of the game and connect it to an EU battle.net account.
