you need to install it with a cd but after a recent patch if you put umm I forgot what file it is in your SC directory you no longer need the CD to play.

or get an .exe from megagames.com or gameburnworld.com and copy that into the directory. But you might not be able to play online.

I'd suggest for you to install SC on another computer. Register the cd-key with Blizzard's new "steam-like" client. Then on your netbook, you can simply download the games, install them, and run them without CDs.

No CD required as of Patch 1.5.2. Here's the method as described by Blizzard

    (1) Install SC
    (2) Install BW (if you have it)
    (3) Download Patch 1.61 (latest as of Feb 1, 2009) - only BW patch needed if you have BW. Only Original patch needed if you don't have BW installed.
    (4) If you own BW copy install.exe from the Broodwar CD to your SC directory. After copy, rename to BroodWar.mpq. If you only have original SC, copy install.exe from original SC CD and rename to StarCraft.mpq.
    (5) Run the game and no CD required.

You can register your CD-key with Blizzard in their new online store. That way you can download a copy of the game, and install it. :D Kinda like Steam.

Oops someone beat me to the punch XD I've had some problems with it, it didn't like to log into Battle.net unless I used the original desktop icon it created.

    Forget .exe cracks and imaging.

BLIZZARD GAME CD KEYS CAN BE REGISTERED ONLINE FOR A PERMANENTLY STORED DOWNLOADABLE VERSION.

Here is a good tutorial on how to do this: http://www.blizzsector.net/diablo-ii-discussion/50005-lost-broken-cds-how-download-cds-blizzard.html
