Stardock must have done really badly with DemiGod and Elemental: War of Magic to consider selling one of their key business components...

Demigod was not a great releases though. It was pretty much a MP game that you couldn't play online... And they should have at least had a validation system. It didn't have to be a fancy DRM, just something to validify that the copy was real for MP play. Which would have deterred piracy since the game was almost purely MP only, no single player.

Demigod wasn't bad tbh. The problem with it was that they didn't really keep updating it as fast as the public wanted. So the other options like HoN and LoL kept looking better and better.

Then at some point the community just died cause most of them got bored of it (cant even remember how long it actually took them to impliment the two new heroes they were designing for so long) which pretty much ended their online experience since there were very few people online for games.

Piracy didnt kill demigod. Demigod was pretty much a broken game at release and the community interest just waned off at some point.

I believe that's the same with Elemental too.

According to Saturnotaku's article, Demigod did have a validation system, but it was hammered by all the pirates attempting to connect anyway. Stardock just wasn't prepared for the numbers or the early unauthorized release by retailers. Same thing happened with Elemental except that game was beyond broken. Hopefully they learn their lessons and avoid B&M entirely. With GameStop taking over Impulse they might be able to get a bigger audience and stick to digital sales.

If only, but apparently the SEC would be pissed or so I'm told.

This means that Gamestop's hold on exclusive preorder content will be getting much worse.
