Description by the creators:
In essence, Starfarer is a ship-to-ship RTS with intensive micro and macro management, in the form of direct weaponry control and fleet commands. If any of you are familiar with Battleships Forever, you'll recognize some of the game mechanics. The difference though, is that Starfarer is actually being developed into a complete game, with a complex world outside of ship-ship battles.
For now, the creators are selling the unfinished game at half price ($10), with free upgrades to each of the released dev versions and the final game once it is complete. So essentially, for the price of supporting their development, you get the game half-off.

Derek Smart wasn't involved in this in any way, shape, or form was he?

I kinda started to realize it after I watched the cynical brit take on it. At first I thought it was an open ended space world like battlecruiser series, but realized it's nothing like that at all (good
). Looks like a fun ride, I could spend $10 worse ways, and have!

Yeah, it does look pretty exciting; I'm thinking about spending the $10 to support them. One of their group, Alex, posted an internal image that they used a while back to lay out some of their ships... and there's still more coming. Even the weapons are interchangable to a certain degree (limited by the ship frame, etc).
Overall, just looks like it has so much potential! -
And for those of you interested in space combat games a new one was just released Sol: Exodus. It's entertaining and fun, but just a little flat. Good entertainment especially where there's a void with these kinds of games. One user at Gamespot gave a great review that covers my feelings exactly: randomtext's Review of SOL: Exodus - GameSpot.com

DIYGamer has posted a look at the next 0.5a preview version (that includes the campaign mode!).
Also, I ended up paying the $10 for the current version (and free updates to the final release version), and I'm definitely impressed. Beaten all the current missions multiple times (except one "Impossible" one that I just can't seem to get), and it still has tons of replay value even in the 0.35a state.
For those of you hesitant to drop $10 on it, the developers will release a demo version soon so you can try it out
