direct2drive is better than steam IMO cuz u dont need internet to access your gaming library....i dont knoe if its still necessary to have internet so i cant really say to much about it...but yeah ill pick direct2drive anytime ....then again they both have their advantages and disadvantages sometimes steam has some incredible sales and sometimes direct2drive has games a little earlier than steam about a day or two and they got some good sales sometimes too but not as often as steam....DIRECT2DRIVE's website continues to grow over the time since i first started using it their library grows and grows everyday very well organized easy to use UI and if im not mistaken they have games for mac as well so yeah your choice of what is best...
-

+Rep light thanks alot. IGN owns them eh? Thats pretty cool.
I was checking there site they have a nice interface. I guess another advantage on Direct2Drive would be that it doesn't always run on your system like STEAM. -
Steam does not have to be connected to use the game on there...of course if your game is online gameplay only then it's a bit useless to play offline. Sometimes, Steam's offline capabilitiy can be a bit finicky, but that's only because either Steam or the game you're trying to play isn't updated. Steam also almost always has some kind of sale going on, just look at the Steam Sale thread in this forum.
Also, Steam does not always run...if you set it that way. I have it start up manually. -
D2D is better IMO, its just like downloading the DVD, where-as steam you have to be connected, etc etc.
Steams prices are better most of the time though. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
big advocate for steam, personally.
you do not need to be connected to the internet to play steam games.
my experience with d2d is sketchy patching. you have to wait for d2d to release special d2d patches, and download and install those patches.
with steam you get unlimited one-click installs of your favorite games. the whole process is encapsulated and you don't have to worry about patching, updating, etc.
its really convenient. -
Been on Steam since January, and its been great.
My only problem with Steam is they don't tell you the download size until you purchase a game.
D2D lists the download size on the summary page, tbh I check it before I make purchases on Steam lol
-
Yea I never used d2d, does it allowed me the download my games many times over and over? But one thing for sure is that steam has a community feature which I enjoyed very much and playing with friends is very easy.
-

STEAM is amazing. They've got good prices and sometimes crazy deals, also you can back up your games to DVD in STEAM so you don't have to redownload the game if you delete it or reinstall it.
STEAM does always run while you are playing a game on STEAM but it uses so little RAM it's not gonna impact performance plus you get a few awesome features such as an in-game friends list and webrowser. It's so easy to play with your friends on STEAM, there is no need for some third-party program like X-Fire. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
agreed. steam and xfire don't impact game performance.
-
I love Steam...and it was a rough sell when I first bought a store copy of Half-Life 2...
But I've seen the 'connected to the internet' comment a few times, and I agree with masterchef341...absolutely untrue...I use Steam in offline mode all the time...and Steam does not launch on the OS boot-up...only when I click on my Steam icon or launch a Steam game...if I'm not connected to the internet when I launch the Steam game, the Steam client asks me if I want to use offline mode...never had a problem with offline mode...
My only two quibbles with Steam now:
1) You have no choice over where you install games. Only where your Steam folder is...moving Steam from drive to drive can be painful. After a 15GB Empire Total War download, a 15GB GRID download just wasn't going to fit on my current Steam drive. I have no experience with D2D, but Impulse allows you to install wherever you want on whatever drive.
2) Steam doesn't really provide technical support for the games they sell. They refer you back to the original vendor, but if the game is over 2 years old, the original vendor has long since stopped actively supporting it. Sometimes, the forums on either Steam or the original vendor's site are helpful. Otherwise, hopefully it runs well right after download despite any quirky drivers you might have on your system. Of course, most publishers don't support laptops very well anyway. 'Oh...that's a laptop...hmmm...we don't guarantee compatibility with laptops.' And that's a total crock in this day and age...even nVidia finally has completely unified drivers for both desktop and mobile hardware. -
Yes, you have unlimited downloads, and if need be, you can request a reset of your game's activation code or license key. My policy is to always buy single player games from D2D, and only get heavily multiplayer games from Steam. That way, I don't risk losing too much money in the off chance that I get on the bad side of a Steam moderator. D2D doesn't care what you do to your game, so long as it does not constitute piracy of any sort. That makes modding games like Fallout 3 very easy.
Also, Steam won't let you share your game with your household. I bought Anno 1701 (Dawn of Discovery) from D2D, and installed on both my laptop and desktop. Sometimes my little brother hops on the desktop to play, and our game times overlap. In Steam, only one person can play your game at a time. -
Steam = easier to connect to friends
D2D = easier to access offline
It is possible to access games offline via Steam (I have done it in the past). I prefer Steam mainly because of the sheer volume of people I know that use Steam and that I have on my Steam friends list. D2D does not offer that. -
You can always check the game size on the game's system requirements.
And answering one of the OP questions: yes, D2D also offers some good deals. -

I personally don't understand why people like F4D this much. I mean after you complete each campaign, and a few death matchs. It got very boring for me, but again it is just my opinion.
-
my only issue with steam is that certain games always have an error message saying "game is not available". if i paid for a game, i expect to play it when i want
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
F4D? lol
Most people learn about STEAM because of valve or they started supporting STEAM because of valve. SO i am not surprised.
Levenly, i've never had that happen to me before.
-
I've had it happy a few times, but I always just double click on the game again and it works right away after that.
-
Steam is better

Lol, so did you download anything from D2D?
-
Wow im hating on Steam right now, or I was, anyways, I lost my internet unexpectedly and I couldnt play ANY of my games because I need to be connected to the internet to go offline! !, anyways, using my phone as a modem, so im actually using my data plan, and offline mode works now, but its quite irritating.
-
False statement. When you try to open a game, it will say not connected to the internet, but there is a button you can press to connect in offline mode.
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Actually Narsnail i believe is right.
Once i couldnt go into offline mode either. Apparently if STEAM has an update that needs to be done you CANNOT go into offline mode. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Not yet. I haven't bought any new STEAM games, either.
?
Computers are not created equal. He might have had a quirk where he it wouldn't allow him to. -
Well I have tried it in 2 different computers, this one Vista 64, and Windows XP. Just saying..
And this is of course for single player games. -
ummm actually it is a true statement, im not exactly a computer retard or anything, but the only way I could play my games in offline mode was to be connected to the internet, which is useless since you would assume offline mode would actually mean, offline.

Awww GRID is finally off the charts
I was originally a Steam user when I bought Orange Box. I thought the concept was cool and was excited. Then I tried D2D with COD4. A few days later I uninstalled Steam and threw my Orange Box in the garbage for how bad Steam was compared to D2D. -
I've never had that problem before, but then again, I've always had Steam startup with Windows. When I don't have an internet connection, Steam tells me that I'm not connected and gives me the option to start in Offline Mode.
-
narsnail & red_dragon are both right. i've had the same experience. here's how i've worked out the quirk: if u start in online mode and steam attempts to sync or download an update, which it can't complete - then even if u go on offline mode, u can't play the game. u need to be in online mode, and complete the update. the quirk here is: after this update is done, without going to offline mode, exit steam completely. when u try to restart steam, either disconnect ur net connection or go to offline mode after that (which also restarts steam but sometimes doesn't work).
i had one especially annoying experience with fear 2 single player demo. it downloaded to 100%, then wanted to do another update which never actually started regardless of how much time i gave it. then just gave up and right click -> delete local content
if it's not going to complete the download after wasting my bandwidth, the least i can do is delete the space it's using and try again when i'm in a bandwidth-friendly environment.

I think people want to get into it before part 2 comes out you know? Its funny i have the full version of part 1, and just never got the chance to beat it(Sad i know) Its hard for me to sit down and do a full play through of it, because i always end up playing with morons. Once i get my G13 im gonna beat it like 10 times lol.
Also i wanted to mention this to everyone(No one actually asked though) The reason i put these charts up, is because the NPD(The people who give video games sales charts) No longer include PC games in there. It's stupid i know but now only console and handheld games are included on the charts so I think it's good for PC users to know what is going in the PC Sales world. -

Forget both Steam and D2D, use Impulse!
Fewer games available, arguably less user-friendly, and you have to wait until business hours for them to confirm your purchase and send you a product code, BUT:
FRIENDLY staff, they answer questions QUICKLY if you post on the support forum, they have awesome deals on less-popular/older games, you'll have a MUCH easier time getting your money back if there's an issue with your purchase - basically, the staff will bend over backwards to make sure your experience with Impulse is a positive one.
Their servers went down last Dec. 24, and they still had staff working on it on Christmas Day to let people download their purchases. When the servers got back up on the early morning of the 26th, they gave 33% off coupons to everyone who made a purchase during the downtime. Just for having to wait two days on Christmas. -
Impulse is good..... I like it for Sins of Solar... wish they had more games. -
