I'm just curious if there is still any kind of community of Quake 3 or 4 players still using Steam. Anyone know?

I dont know about the original Quake 3, but ID Tech does have a F2P Quake 3 multiplayer version at the Quake Live site.
There's also a bunch of Quake 3 engine based games floating the net, open source and free, but im guessing you want the original feel. :3

Quake 4 was only recently released on Steam. Hopefully people are playing it because I will be when I get it. I can still find servers in Doom 3 so there's hope.

Yea Quake 4 was actually pretty cool in my opinion. Sure, it was basically just Quake 3 Arena multiplayer with Quake 2 campaign, but I definitely had a lot of fun with that game. I played on PC and on Xbox. If you want competition PC is definitely where it's at. I got to the top 10 on xbox live for FFA without any problems really. Too easy

I usually played OpenArena... It's brutal. Free. OpenSource. Multi-OS.

I really love excessive mod for Q3A. I just hook up using the Multiplayer menu inside the game. I also have the switcher to change from 1.30 1.31 1.32 etc. Some great servers on 1.30 but for some reason they dont always show up. Also I lost my original Q3 config some time ago that had all my good bindings and I cant remember how to get them back, plus they wont even work on some servers. I play under ATOM ANT if you play excessive FFA.
