steam has got a new opt in beta download.
at the moment DONT DO IT! especially if youve got COD MW2 loaded.
im waiting for a reply from steam and infinity ward on this.
it looks like as soon as you opt in and download the new steam beta it deletes modern warfare 2 and starts updating/downloading it again. all 12gb of it.
as soon as it started doing this i rolled back to the original steam but its still attempting to download the game again. its been going for an hour now but and says i have 2 hours 50 minutes remaining.
10 minutes agio i got a popup box saying. sorry steam is unable to deal with your request and closes the download box.
looking in my games list it says its loaded 100% and ready to play. click on the load shortcut and it says you do not have this game loaded.
its now started to update/download it again but with 3 hours 2 minutes remaining.
as soon as i get more info ill post back.
anyone else having the same problems.

Oh well, it's not like I play MW2 anymore anyways.
-
I downloaded the beta and luckily all my games are fine, but I don't have MW2. I would definitely think twice about the beta after reading this though..
-
it actually did do something wierd with my MW2 Multiplayer as well. Mine also tried to redownload the enitre 12GB's, but i paused it, restarted, and then it restarted downloading at 8Gb, so I just let it finish the last 4GB... so, not sure what exactly happened or why, but mine did something similar, but only with MW2 Multiplayer. All other games appear fine.
-
just done a reboot and then cleanup using cc cleaner and also a registry cleanup.
as soon as i log into steam it starts downloading the 12gb file again and now its 4 hours 15 minutes.
i give up. -
thanks for the warning! I won't be installing my MW2 then when I get my M11x in tomorrow. I'll wait on it, but I'm loving the Steam beta though =)
-
I opted into the beta, and it re-downloaded MW2. Annoying? Sure, but the game still works, and the re-download only affects the multiplayer portion of the game anyway; campaign and Special Ops are not affected at all.
-
I wonder if you'd be able to make a backup of MW2 before switching to the beta, then restore it during the restart? Hopefully that would prevent the download or at least reduce it to a minimal size.
-
after an hour or so i get the steam pop up box again, unable to deal with your request.please try later.
done a system restore but thats just slowing my whole computer up now. as soon as i log into steam it starts to download it again.
its also affected my single player so dont know whats happened there.
no other games have been affected. -
yeah, now that it finished redownloading MW2 Multiplayer, all seems fine... not sure if I like the new update though. We'll see...
-
Happened to me too. Sort of a pain, but what's done is done.
-
What does the beta do anyway? Other than delete MW2's files.
Also does it affect TF2? I don't have MW2 so i might just opt in. -
when i downloaded it it didnt delete my mw2, i just played all my games to double check, i did redownload CoH, all 14gb of it lol
-
Reports say it affects Company of Heroes as well.
-
Ha, I'm surprised so many people even bought the PC version of MW2.
Well, the new update works fine for me, though I did have to fix my windows fonts that wasn't Valves fault, it was because my Arial fonts got screwed up earlier.
So far only problem I've had is it messed up my favorites list, but that's pretty minor.
LOVING all the interface changes, every single one of them. -
Sometimes im happy i never go for beta products. Would be downloading 30gbs tonight if i did
-
I didn't even know there was a beta.
If I have the store bought MW2 so can I just put the disks in and reinstall it?
I won't loose my character or anything, right? -
-
What's the difference between Steam Beta and normal Steam anyway? I was under the impression that Steam Beta merely received updates a week or two earlier, but it's not as if there's anything significant enough about any Steam update to want to get it earlier than others.
-
usually the beta client isn't much, but they did a complete UI overall for this steam beta and it is SICK (IMO). I love it.
-
This also happened to my copy of Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts. I heard the beta client already has a fix for this, but alternatively you could try going into your steamapps folder, right clicking on the folders for the deleted games and selecting 'Restore previous versions' from say, yesterday.
-
I had TF2 on steam and after the new update loaded, it was fine
Just downloaded a 125 Mb update for it.
I still need to check GRiD though, hope that doesnt happen (10 GB)
-
the beta is just a new layout of the steam page. looks ok but for what it done i wouldnt recommend it.
it finally finished downloading mw2 at 1am
loads again fine but not had time to play to see what the update has done. -
Well, I have a different problem with this new beta.
After trying it out, offline mode no longer works, even if I go back to the normal UI.
Let's hope Steam comes up with a fix fast. Not having offline mode is a real pain -

Every day they release updates for the new BETA which fix a lot of bugs. Two days ago when I first opted into the BETA it would crash for no reason. After an update this morning everything is much smoother and far more stable.
-
have all the problems gone away yet?
-
im back on with mw2.
took almost 4 hours for the update to finish last night. also theres about 8gb gone from my hd so whatever it was its added it and not overwritten.
at least its playing again. -

don't ever opt in beta unless there is a specific reason to do it

Also for anyone who thinks the new UI has too much wasted space, someone made a nice tweak to the interface and I think it looks quite a bit better.

Just extract it into your Steam folder and restart Steam.
