So today I buy my first game off of steam. I pre-order the orange box. I leave for a few hours and let team fortress and half life episode one download. I come back and restart my comp. NOw whenever I click on steam it goes to update goes to 26% then says you have another steam running. WHich I don't ( I checked processes). Sigh should I uninstall steam? But if I uninstall do I have to re-download the games?

That is the only good thing about steam. The games are kept onto your ACCOUNT and not on your actual hard-drive. Thus, you can re-download them even if you have to uninstall Steam. It happens to me all the time which is why Steam and their lazy ass programmers should burn. I hate Steam.

Oh wait, you do have to re-download them. I read your post wrong.

If your gonna uninstall steam copy the "SteamApps" folder from the steam directory then reinstall steam and paste the folder back into your steam directory this will let you keep the games you have.

Your steam games are connected to your account. You can uninstall steam and reinstall it back and your game will still be there.

I backup my steam apps files to an external HD so that I can reload onto another computer without redownloading.

I just create a Norton Ghost image with the most up to date drivers and game and software updates, refresh it about once a month, and then anytime I want to reinstall Windows it only takes 45 minutes and I have a fresh and ready to go system.
Never again will I have to deal with Steam issues when reinstalling...

You shouldn't actually have to copy the steam apps folder if you want to uninstall steam and reinstall.

I did it when i was having problems and my games were still there downloaded. Didn't have to re-download them (although i did backup the apps folder *just incase*) ;)
