Being new to steam as I'm playing through Half-Life 2 for the first time ever (I know, I know, but I finally have a computer worthy of playing it respectably :) ) is there a site that has a preview of games that will go on sale via steam? Or is it a case where you just have to keep checking steam every day\weekend to see what is discounted?

Being at work during the week I (obviously) don't have access to the steam system.

    Thanks in advance!

Well usually I get notifications on the Steam "Update News" windows that pop up once in a while after playing a game. If your workplace hasn't blocked www.steampowered.com then you should be able to see everything on sale from Steam.

YUP!! working through the orange box now, HL2, then the 2 episodes. I was looking through seems old news and saw some A-M-A-Z-I-N-G past deals on games and don't want to miss out on any in the future.

I recently got a new laptop and since i was actually capeable of playing games i decided to dip my toe in the PC gameing scence as i'm a avid 360gamer. I got the orange box and CS:S and was blown away.

I can play hl2 with everything full (even AA and AF) at 1920x1200. For eps 1 and 2 and CS:S i just drop the AA. TF2 i keep it safe with a low res.

I have a HD telly to play my 360 on but after playing these games i was blown away with the graphical detail, which IMO is better than the consoles can offer.

HL2 and the eps have rocketed to my favourite games ever along with KOTOR 1 (which i also now have on PC)

What kind of GPU do you have, Pudsey? I have no problem playing TF:2, EP1/2, CS:S, HL2, and all others at 1440x900, AFx16, AAx16, staying about 70FPS in all aside from TF2, which can dip down around 40-50.

i have a 256mb 8600m GT with no OC (DDR2 i believe). I'm on a 17" dell vostro and I love my 1920x1200 screen, even during day to day use it rocks!!!.

Also is there a way to have the FPS displayed on steam games without using a third party program like rivatuner? I know in oblivion i can do this with a console command.

I get a nice FPS with all games but with TF2 i would just like to know how far i can push the game

yes Fraps free version is a nice utility.
And you should be able to run orange box easily with a 8600M GT

The best game deals are usually weekend deals. So just be sure to check steam each weekend for the weekend deal.

Other deals are usually permanent price cuts or combo deals.

On an unrelated note, Space Siege is on Steam!!!!!!

    AHHHHHHHH!!!! :D :D :D

Go to options, click keyboard, click advanced, then enable developer console..

I reccomend using cl_showfps 1 in console instead of net_graph.

cl_showfps simply displays your FPS in the top right corner of the screen, it's very small, and doesn't get in the way.
Net_graph however is large, and can be distracting since it shows alot more information regaurding the status of game servers. Such as how many times per second your computer is updating with the server, your real time latency, and how many networking packets aren't going through.
