i want to buy half-life 2 or the orange box, maybe CS:S but I don't know if i should buy off Steam or buy it in store.

Do the in-store retail boxed copies (for steam games) make you put in the disc when u want to play? or are the discs JUST for installation? i'm on the go so i do not like to carry around CD's as I might break them on accident.

i heard that all of steam games do not require a disc, regardless of online purchase or boxed retail purchase, I wanted to know if that statement was true

    Please answer thoroughly, thanks

You can buy the game in-store and install with the CD and use the CD Key that is in the box. Or you can buy the game through steam and it will download. You can also install the game from the CD (the game would then register to your steam account) then delete the game, then re-download through Steam at a later time.

The retail boxed copy of Steam-only games do not require you to have the disk inserted to play. Basically, you only use them to install the game.

If you want, you don't even need to use the disk to install the game. Just input your CD Key and download the game, although there is no real reason to do that.

    So, to summarize:
    - You do not need your CD to play once registered with Steam
    - You can download the game whenever you want once it's registered, so you don't have to lug the CDs around ever time you want to reformat.

So all in all, there is little reason to get the retail boxed copy unless your internet connection is slow or you are bandwidth limited. You can go to www.steampowered.com and get them.
