I'm getting an unable to connect message when I open Steam now. ("Unable to start Steam Engine: *SteamStartEngine(0x12e8c8) failed with error 200: Connection Reset, WinSock Error 10054 'Connection reset by peer'") So I can't play counterstrike or half life 2, although i was playin both just 12 hours ago. Did something change on my side or Valve's side of the connection?

And also, what if I didn't have an internet connection and just wanted to play Half Life 2 single player? Is that even possible?

I believe you can play HL2 single player with out being connected to the internet. Now from that error messege it sounds like an internet/socket problem. Im assuming you have highspeed if your playing/downloading steam games. I would call your internet provider and tell them the problem that your having with connecting to the servers, and see if they can walk you through something to fix it on your end. I had similar problems before and the problem for me was something to do with proxies I think. If its not on your end, you might want to try and re-install steam and see if that fixes it. Or you could contact steam directly and see what they say.

Yeah your right jordan, you cant play HL2 singleplayer without an internet connection. I just unpluged my cable modem and tried it. At first it said it couldnt connect to steam, then asked if I wanted to proceede in "offline mode". I said yes, it started to go, then said it needed a connection. That kinda sucks, you cant even play HL2 single without being connected. I guess its their near foolproof way to stop piracy, not that I know any ways to get around it, but im sure there are.

You are very wrong, You can play HL2 without connecting to Steam. In the manual it says it connects 'virtualy' to the Steam account when internet isn't available. And I have done that some times and know for a fact that it works.

But it requires that You are unpluged to the internet, so if the Steam client sees a connection it fails ;)
