Is this possible?? Installing Linux on PS3 then using mouse/keyboard and use it just like a computer with a monitor?? Does steam work on Linux too?

Didn't I read recently that Sony will be discontinuing support for Linux? Believe read that the latest firmware disables ability to install a different OS.

Only if you choose to install the 3.21 firmware that was released earlier this month, it'll remove the Install Other OS option.

Yea, but if you don't, you won't be able to play newer games (that require the 3.21+ firmware) nor will you be able to login to Home or the PSN.

I guess it would be possible to load steam (when it is relased for linux) and browse around in the program but launching a computer game on the ps3 would most likely not work.... It has a cpu that is very difficult to code for (alot of cores but they aren't all equal like an intel or amd processor) and the gpu is very specialized and probably does not have a normal driver like a computer. The games would most likely not recognize the hardware and crash. If a game did somehow launch I doubt the game would be gpu accelerated and would run like crap. If I remember correctly the gpu was actually disabled in linux originally but not sure if it is anymore.

I'm not into the ps3 modding scene and have no idea of its capabilities but I could see emulators working and playing old non-taxing games on the ps3 via the cpu (hell people may have been doing this for years like on the dreamcast and xbox idk).

Steam only works on Linux via Wine; there is no native Linux Steam client. Wine requires an x86 or x86_64 install of Linux, as it is a compatibility layer, not an emulator. The PS3 does not use an x86-based processor, and instead has it's own specific, Cell-based Linux distributions. Ergo, Steam will not run. Even if you installed an emulator/Virtual PC suite that allowed you install x86 Linux or even Windows, you wouldn't be able to get adequate 3D performance to play games.

    In short: No.

Even if you got it running by some miracle, Linux does not have access to the GPU on the PS3, so it would be pointless. The only games that might work would be stuff like Plants vs. Zombies, anything that didn't need an OpenGL processing graphics card.
