So now that ea is getting even more greedy and stupid they decided to make their upcoming big name games origin exclusives and not allow them on steam personally I think that they will fail in the long run because steam is already so big but who do you think will come out as the bigger name or which do you prefer?

I prefer Steam because they always have great deals and is not exclusive to one game company :D

I haven't personally tried Origin yet, so Steam wins by default.

I do really enjoy Steam though. I've been using it since 2006 or 2007, and it's come such a long way since then.

^It's pretty much brand new. It's EA's counterpart to Steam as a digital distribution and community management program.

What titles are Origin exclusive? I've heard it mentioned a few times, but I don't know much about it. I doubt by withholding a few games is Origin going to come out on top. Steam is already so big, that it would ill-advised to try and monopolize the digital distribution of games

I think for the most part people will go with whatever will sell them the games they want to buy for the cheapest price. Steam has done a pretty good job of this with their sales. EA seems to be moving in the right direction, offering 50% off basically their whole PC collection until 6/26. The code is FIFTYOFF if you guys didn't get it. Debating getting Bulletstorm for $15. DA: Origins Ultimate Edition is also $15 with the code if you don't have it yet.

Steam... Origin's not even a competitor. All they have are EA games. All this means is that I won't be buying any EA games in the future.

What is the point of this thread again?? JK lol

Even though origin has the exclusivity of battlefield 3, there is no current true competitor for steam, by the fact that mots pc gamers(like me) owns such as huge amount of games on steam, there is no reason for switching over to another platform. I prefer to buy the physical version of battlefield 3 than getting it on Origin(or the same and old ea download manager, just renamed origin lol) Steam all the way baby :)

Origin exclusives are the new old republic star wars mmo and possibly battlefield 3 and steam started out as just valve games so origin is likely to get more than just ea games in the future (if they have one, hopefully not because i want all my games in one area on steam)

takes up more hard drive space to have 2 game library thing and its easier to just have all my games in one place, if I get to have all my physical games all together on one shelf i should also have all of my digital games all together in one library not in multiple. its inconvenient and if origin does well then you will see blizzard/activision make their own and pull out from steam and it will keep growing

Origin has a huge road to go if they want to compete with Steam... including the fact Origin only sells EA games. We have just to see GFWL to understand that just by being a big name company doesn't makes miracles automatically...

Yes, actually Steam started the digital distribution business, and that picture is completely different when you have competitors like Steam, D2D, Impulse, Gamer's Gate, GFWL (chills to my spine), etc.

I don't think Steam started it, but they were the most successful. Given time I think Origin might be a true competitor and now's one of the better times for EA to really push it.

Aside from SW:TOR, BF3 and ME3 could become exclusives and no matter how much people say they'll skip them, the failed boycott on MW2 leaves me highly skeptical. As far as getting other publishers to sign up, they'll probably start out like other services by targeting the smaller publishers and work their way up. They don't have to get exclusive games from other publishers right away, just take a piece of the pie from Steam and chip away at it.

and lets not forget good ole gog.com
but between the 2 steam hands down. they seem to understand what gamers want, are unintrusive, have many sales, and probably most important- are neutral to friendly with pirates/hackers.

origin, with ea being your typical greedy, corporate sob's, is just a seciruty hack waiting to happen.

you realize that by asking 2 questions in the poll, you have no idea if the respondents prefer steam or origin, and you have no idea if the respondents believe that one in particular of the two companies will come out on top.

People are overreacting to the "exclusivity" of Battlefield 3 and The Old Republic. It will most likely be a timed exclusivity on EA's Origin service. You will most likely see these games on Steam at some point after release. EA is probably just going after pre-orders and launch-day money with these exclusivities.

EA would not completely shut out distribution on Steam; there are 40 million PC gamers on Steam, and to ignore those people would be stupid. You can love EA or hate EA... but the fact of the matter is that they are not run by stupid people, and they are very good at making money.

i have both installed and several others (impulse, desura, gfw marketplace, capsule,...). i like that i can buy ea games from amazon, d2d & impulse and register them with ea to use origin to download them. origin's downloading service is very good, imo second only to steam.

It sounds like not many of you have even tried origins. I have and I gotta say it is not off to a bad start. I still have my steam account with most of my games, but the three games that I have on Origins has been a pleasant experience. I just use it like EADM really download and install my games then I play them. Pain free does not have to be active to enjoy your games. I use both so I hope both succeed, also Steam has its flaws so lets not act like it's 100% perfect.

    Lol so much hate. D:
I voted Origin because its not all that bad as people here want it to be.

The first version of EA Downloader (Crysis 1 times) was horrible, il agree on that, but the new EA Download Manager, that also got renamed to Origin it much better now.
After downloading and installing a game, all the other features for Origin are optional.

Check me up on Origin if you want, my Gamer ID is DEagleson. :D
All my games exept Spore and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was bought when EA threw that 50% off sale not long ago.

But if you added a third aswer: Using both i would have voted on that.

The poll question shouldn't be "who do you think will come out on top?" but "who is already on top?"

Steam is an all-encompassing store, has most major publishers/developers' offerings on it, and has been around for years as the innovator. Origin is owned by EA and I think only has EA titles.

It all comes down to preference. I will say that I have probably $500 worth of games bought on Steam (I do 99% of my PC games purchases on Steam) and the only reason I even know what Origin is would be because when I bought Dragon Age 2 I was sent a voucher to download Mass Effect 2 for free on what is now known as Origin. ;)

I do like the idea of digital distribution for one, I can get my games cheaper, and there is always a promotion to give me some itching to buy something.

However I like to keep my things tiddy, which I cant using 4 different service providers (steam, origin, gog, impulse), I would like the feature to redeem the games on one of them, it would make my world a lot a easier.

However Im liking the origin prices in Brazil, there was a great sale of DA2, it was 39 dollars (yes its quite expensive to buy games where I live) SC2 cost me 20 dollars (6 months), and will cost me another 50 if I want to keep playing it for forever

I don't take GoG as a "Steam competitor", given that they have an specialty: selling old games that works on modern computers with modern OS. I believe the people from GoG make those "ports". If they sell those "ports" via Steam TOO, that would be different.

If there was any physical store in my country with at least 5% the games available on Steam at almost the same price, maybe I would think the same thing. But piracy is like a virus here in my country, and everyone loves that virus, is a way of life... is sad... but part of the guilt comes from the stores: they prefers to sell 3 legal copies of, for example, Assassins creed 2, at 75$ instead of selling it at a reasonable price and sell a lot of copies.

Thanks to Steam I don't even think of torrent any single game. I CAN (and have) buy from Amazon, but will wait about 2 weeks for the game to arrive here, and from a 30$ game, you add taxes and everything else and you end paying about 45$ total. With a service like Steam, I buy a game of 30$ and the final cost is... 30$. And the "delivery time" depends only on my bandwidth. I only bought from Amazon if I WANT the packaging (limited ones), LOVE too much the franchise... and have the money ;) ... the last one was Fallout 3.

Apart from that, Steam did an EXCELENT work merging games + community + social media. Apple tried to do that with iTunes Ping (music instead of games) and fail miserably.

If you like the fact that you can actually walk into a store and buy a physical copy of a game, you'll actually find a better selection at Walmart or Target.

GameStop really cut down on its selection of PC games several years ago, to the point where most GameStops will only dedicate half of a shelf / rack to PC games. The rest of the store is filled with console games, and used console games.

since the poll now requires it

steam miserably fail when you take it offline everytime i tryed it failed and told me sorry you cannot play your games steam is a new ubisoft style DRM so i hate it

origine well i hate EA for all they are all they represent they destroy every single studio or franchise they touch they ruin it dumbifie it and kill it
thier principal mean of operation is buy a new studio fire the guys that make it works put ridiculous goals for the franchise even if it was ment for a niche they alway try to make it for the lowest denominator even if the very nature of the franchise make it not viable (HECK stop dubifiying RTS for the consols no one wana play a RTS on a consol) ruin the name of the studio by killing of every single franchise that the studio they bought ran and then move on to buy a new studio and repeat

To use it offline it must have been online after any cleaners or a sudden shutdown took place, I can use steam offline all the time I want, its part of their new security measures.

Im not saying this because I believe steam is perfect
