I use steam on Vista HP x64, but can't say I've run into that problem.

Is it connecting to the internet ok but just freezing when you make a selection? Or are you having problems connecting to the store page?

If it's the latter it could be a firewall issue. If it's freezing when you make a selection I'd try the Steam tech support or check the Steam forums at http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/index.php

dude i get that problem with steam but it doesnt even finish scaning for my games. it just takes a dump and then i gave up. but i think it is a firewall issue. but i am getting internet off a euro server. i hear some satellite service providers block steam because it sucks up so much bandwidth.

It sounds like the Firewall issue, check out the tech support and steam forums, should be more help.

I have the same issue and Steam support couldn't help. If steam accesses web page like material such as the store page, news page, etc then it locks and my CPUs are hammered at like 80% until I close via task manager. It totally sucks. I managed to get it to open up to my games page with no news popups so I can play a few games but it still sucks.

My firewall is open to steam and I'm not using any super security features or anything. I have Vista Business on a VAIO SZ460.

I had a similair problem. You have to go into file----settings and then enable the Community Preview

It runs Steam as a service - I haven't had any problems since.

My steam is up to date according to itself.

And is the "settings page" the window with like 5 tabs?

    Yes

About halfway down you'll see a line called "Beta participation"

There'll be a dropdown box there.. choose the only option - "Steam Community"

Ok so I think i've fixed this problem though the coming days will tell if it's a permanent fix or not. I followed the directions on the steam web site for enabling the new steam community preview. (click file, settings. then click the change button under the account tab) This allows steam to run as a service. They also recommend that you disable user access control though that was not necessary in my case. The relevant article on steam support can be found here.

i had this problem and updating through windows update solved it. They say its a problem with internet explorer because its used as the browser in steam.

i had the exact same problem - as soon as i ran steam it would just freeze up after logging me in.. i would then have to end task - this would happen 90% of the time and got very annoying. i uninstalled it hoping that later when i wish to reinstall everything will be okay. if there is a sure fire fix for this problem please drop me a private message - i'd appreciate it a lot.

I have not had any problems with Steam so far. I only use it to play Half-Life 2 and to update my games.
