Not sure if this goes in this forum, so mods feel free to move it. Was wondering if anyone knows a good controller I can use to play Street Fighter 4 on my laptop. I've looked at the "Fightpads" but honestly from the reviews they seem far too cheaply made. I don't really care what type of controller it is, as long as it can make playing SF4 a lot easier and fun.

Right now, playing on the keyboard just plain sucks.

You can always go with a 360 controller.

Ha, I actually tried SF4 last night for the first time.

I suck SO hard. I was getting beat on Very Easy, lol.

Needless to say I didn't keep the game for long. I didn't really like it much.

But ya, the 360 controller works just fine if you have one.

I wouldn't recommend a 360 Controller for that game, I found the keypad not responsive enough. Unlike most other games, you need a bit more responsiveness to pull of moves in this one. I recommend the Logitech Cordless Action Controller.

    Edit:

I was just playing the old Street Fighter on Mame and in my opinion, the Street Fighter PC version is nothing compared to the likes of World Warrior, Hyper Fighting and the other older ones. it feels like something has been lost with the all of the updated sprites. Mame emulation is near flawless at 60 fps and perfect sound. I notice my CPU switches to Dual Core Mode during play.

I play sf4 quite a bit, and i can tell you either play on a fightstick or just play on keyboard.

I bought a Madcatz fightpad and it is horrible, i find keyboard much much easier to play on and i am actually quite decent on it. The sf4 community considers keyboard nearly on par with fightsticks.

It also depends what character you're playing. I can play on my keyboard well because my main only has quarter circle or half circle motions. If you're using zangief or someone that needs to do 360 motions, then you need a stick because 360s are stupid even on a fightpad. Keyboard has its advantages too because of the easy shortcuts that are hard to do on a fightstick/pad.

A 360 controller is like one of the worst controllers to play SF4 on. If you can't get an arcade stick to work, I recommend using a ps2/ps3 controller to play with.

Also, did razor ever release their version of the 360 controller, because I heard they were fixing the dpad?

I find the 360 controller easy to use.

I've been trying to use the keyboard, but it's just so weird to not be able to use your thumbs for a fighting game. All the reviews say the fightpad's quality sucks, so I'm hesitant before blowing $40 bucks.

That was my first initial idea, cheaper too. Though i wanted to know for sure if it actually makes playing the game a lot easier.

I've been playing SF4 for a while, and though I absolutely get creamed online, in single player, I breeze through the hardest difficulty setting. I use the keyboard, and like the above poster said, you're not going to get anywhere with Zangeif, but everyone else should play fine.

This is all you need although playing with the keyboard works fine for me. But I still get my butt kicked by Abel in the arcade mode....

If it must be a controller This is the one I recommend.

Unlike the standard 360 controller it has a real D-Pad not one of those floating ones.

It will work on PC & 360.

However if your serious about the game or like some retro gaming your best off not getting a controller and getting a joystick.

Madcatz has introduced authentic arcade quality joysticks to the American market for a reasonable cost.

The one to get is the Tournament Edition, it uses Sanwa parts, the exact same buttons and joystick found in the actual SF4 arcade cabinet. The 360 one works again with both PC & the 360.

The Standard Edition uses fake Sanwa rip off parts, however they are the same dimensions so its very easy to swap out parts for higher quality ones should you wish.

I just got a Round 2 Tournament Edition about a month ago on sale for 30% off, (they have sales like this often) directly from Madcatz.

    Here it is stock:

I have done several mods to it since.

First I changed out the buttons and joystick with Seimitsu parts, these are often found on Japanese shooting game cabinets (SHMUPS) because thats the kind of game I play usually with my stick.

    Then I changed the artwork.

Here is what it looked like at that point:

Since then I did the internal modifications. I added a new PCB into the stick and soldered it into the existing PCB and added a RJ45 jack on the back.

Now this same joystick works on 360, PS3, PC, SNES, Wii, Gamecube, Genesis, NES, Saturn, and a few others.

I have no pictures of that mod, I may take some soon.

I am going to take the Sanwa parts I took out of it and instal them into a cheaper Standard Edition case and let my kids use it when they play me in games.
