Ok, so I missed the deal at TigerDirect (sold out) of the X205-S9349 for $1500 and now I have to pay $1700 to order through one of Amazon.com supplies, since NewEgg.com refuses to accept an international credit card.

    Here's the break-down.

    1.) Dell XPS M1710
    T7200
    160GB 7.2k RPM
    GeForce 7950GTX 512mb
    Includes: 3 Year CompleteCare warranty
$2100 - Here, in Canada. Refurbished, but only 2 months old - was returned by someone, with no signs of wear/use.

    2.) Toshiba X205-S9349
    You know the specs.
    Includes: No warranty.
$1750 for notebook + shipping then let's say $150 taxes at the border, for a total of $1900.

The Toshiba is $200 shy of the XPS m1710 and includes no warranty and is probably lower-end. I seriously don't know what to do.

Also, people have cited waiting is also probably a good option. I'm at a stand-still in my decision-making process. Argh.

I would take the Dell XPS M1710, the 7950GTX is very powerful !
And you got 3 years warranty !

The price difference between the two is only $200 so I'd get the Dell. The XPS' Go7950GTX is much faster than the 8700M-GT.

one more for going with the dell.

I am not sure whether you need the notebook very soon. You might be able to get a notebook with a 8800 gtx in the next few months (maybe for around the same price).

Dell's CompleteCare warranty is excellent. You're shelling out 200 more for the warranty. The warranty's worth more than that actually, which means the actual price of the laptop's lower than the Toshiba's.

Go for the Dell. The 7950 is an excellent card.

    Is having a 7950GTX future-proof?

I mean, with DirectX collecting ground (if it even is) opting for a DX9 card isn't a mistake?

    Also,

How does the 7900 GS stack up against the 8600M/8700M series? Mostly the latter of the two.

I can get a brand new, non-refurbished, Dell XPS M1710 with similar specs with a 7900 GS for like, $1500 - so it's a pretty solid deal, too.

    Ugh.. decisions > me.

DirectX 10 is not amounting to much right now . . . it is more of a marketing tool than anything. The average consumer is taught to think that higher numbers are better (which isn't always true) - i.e. DirectX 9 vs. 10 - so it's easy for companies to capitalize on that and market 'features' that might not even make a difference.

Go7950GTX >>> 8700M-GT for performance, any way you look at it. Period.

Yea, pretty solid. How'd you come up with 15 bills? I built a lower end one a few days ago that came to somewhere around $2300. Is there a deal currently going on or a coupon?

As for the gpu's, check this link.

I strongly suggest that you make sure you have an acceptable warranty on any notebook you buy, and waiting a few weeks at this point may really pay off.

i think the upcoming alienware m15x was able to be configured with 8800gtx, 1gb ram, 2.2ghz dual core, 120gb hdd for 2100ish....add 50 if you want 2gb ram.

if you don't want to wait, go with 1710. dx10 isn't too different from dx9
