I plan on getting a PS3 but I don't happen to have an HDTV to fully support the visual wowness that it is. So is it possible to somehow hook up the PS3 to like a laptop LCD screen and play it? I know this is a dumb question and I probably sound like an idiot-- but what the hell.

ANd I'm thinking of either the S96J or Z69J

Yes, you can use a TV tuner to connect external equipment like consoles and DVD players.

If your laptop has 1080i resolution on it - which I doubt it has the ability to do - you can. I don't think you can get the "p" becasue TV tuners don't deal with progressive scan (unless new ones do). Not to worry, your PS3 should downgrade the resolution to 720/480i

Also I dont think you are going to find a capture device that will achive such resolutions. And because it will be an analog connection, your video quality will pretty much be crap still. Oh yea, theres usualy a time delay on video capture feeds.

Dont worry about it man, HDTV's have really dropped in price. Remember you dont have to get a 50+' TV to have it be HD. There are smaller versions that are alot more economical. But wait unitll the holiday season this year when PS3 comes out. By then HDTV prices would have dropped even more.

BTW have you heard about Panasonics new Plasma? 103' flat screen...$70,000!!! If you just won the lottery and have all those millions to blow, would you mind buying me one of those?

I wouldnt mind hooking a desktop with a Core 2 Extream x6800, and 2x Geforce 7950GX2's (Quad-SLI) up to that beast. OMG Crysis!!! Wait that would have to be an 8 series card...8950GX2? *drool*

[EDIT] Oops ment to edit that into previous post.

No, you don't have to scap the idea at all. I am not sure what jeffmd is saying, but I can verify that you can hook up consoles to your notebook.

If you have 1028x768 or more, that is pretty **** good resolution. Granted, you won't get the full PS3 potential, but it's something, although not 1080i.

I would like to note that I own a sager 5760, and purchased a HP express card tv tuner (Because the stock internal tv tuner card works with XP MCE, but not the part of MCE where you can use it as a tivo and such) , and hooked my Xbox 360 up too it. It works, but you cant play games on it like that. I tryed playing geomerty wars, and the TV signal lag was like 2-3 seconds.

If you want a 1080i HDTV, yes, it will be expensive. But for "regular" hi-def (720p, etc) there are plenty of sets that aren't expensive at all - some can be had for less than $500.

Personally, I have my Xbox 360 hooked up with the VGA adapter to my Dell 2005FPW for video and to my Logitech Z-2300s for audio. Once my laptop shows up, I'll hook everything to my KVM switch, since the Compal HGL80 doesn't have an external DVI port.

You don't have to have HDTV for PS3. It will downscale to SD resolution. It just won't look as nice. But imagine this. As good as it looks when you watch G4, it will still look better when you have one yourself. And I think that's pretty **** good. And then when you can afford an HDTV with 1080p and HDMI, it will look absolutely amazing. But even on a regular TV, it will still have the best graphics.

Did you get rid of all your unneeded processes? I think XP MC uses a lot of memory - I used a cheapo USB 2 tuner with the software it gave, and it worked with almost no lag.

gaut, let me put it another way. How many capture devices do you know that support higher then 640x480 resolution view modes on anything but HDTV OTA signals?
