Does this look like a good idea, or just more game fodder to wade through every time I want to pick a game?![]()

im tired of all these extra things needed for gaming these days, steam, GoG, EA, Ubisoft etc all have there own platforms, and i personally have been trying to avoid them as much as possible, more crap on my pc for a one off game install, often needing constant updating.
i may be a minority but i wish it was like to old days where games where complete and you only needed a disc, recently steam had ark for like $20 im not sure i would personally subscribe to a platform just for a bit of a saving, but that might just be me.
i certainly don't like the idea of a monthly sub to play a standard game. -
That's why I moved my primary gaming to support GoG. No client needed. No DRM. Install as many times as you want on all your computers with no activation limits. You can use their galaxy client if you want but it's basically a launcher and auto updater and is totally optional.
Choices for newer games might be more limited but there are still a ton of new ones coming out and the occasional AAA release like The Witcher 3. I actually have rebought games on GoG that I own the discs for but I really like their installer that makes it super easy to get running on a modern machine (like Morrowind, Quake 3 etc).
I love the fact that I "own" the games as much as I did with my old discs. I can make my own backups and install on all my computers without worry about DRM. Many of them have LAN play so I can even play multiple copies with friends when visiting like I used to do with older games. -
I guess you aren't familiar with the history / standard Humble Bundle?
They bundle a bunch of games for several levels of pricing each week, and the more you pay for the bundle, the more levels of the bundle unlock, and have really good games, books, etc in each level - with a bonus level if enough people buy that week - it's ususally enough.
That's a great idea, and lots of people enjoy it.
The monthly subscription gives you that bundle deal every month, plus other discounts / credits / deals special to that subscription membership.
They have lots of games on sale every week as individual and other bundles / groupings based on publisher/developer/genre.
It's a cool idea, but I have never bought a bundle every month, that's gonna be a lot of games.
Oh yeah, the games aren't hosted by Humble, they are hosted by Steam and I assume other hosted worlds - although all of mine have been on Steam. There is no Humble app or "background service" to run.Last edited: Feb 13, 2016 -
ohhh interesting, i guess the main problem i have with that type of idea is the "bundle" maybe have 90% items i will never use, in which case the deal isn't that great of a deal because the 1 or 2 items ill actually use from the bundle might be a similar price after you factor the remainder of the bundle that isn't wanted into the equation.
cool idea though.hmscott likes this. -
Except you can always sell or gift the ones you don't want.

isn't that like when you have lots of crap in your garage and decide its time to give it away, usually to family or friends, and then they end up with the unwanted crap.

"One man's trash is another man's treasure". Some people like games that other people don't. It's not like you'd be giving them old smelly shoes or something. That reminds me I still have games in my Steam gift inventory to finish giving out. Yes it's down to the lesser quality ones, but some people have limited budget and/or limited PC performance and some of these indie and older titles fit the bill perfectly.

I've been doing this a lot recently, especially with old classics (recently rebought all the Doom and Quake games as well as Fallout 1&2), in fact I've kept hold of my discs for those games too so I own 3 versions of them! I like the way you can back up your installers for GoG and do everything offline
On that note, does anybody want a free Call of Juarez Gunslinger key? Got it in the latest bundle and already have it. -
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
