I don't remember exactly how much I paid in total but Prema was near enough to the final figure. Some people are lucky enough not to get hit with VAT though.

You can always use the 302.77 ones on the Clevo site that are specifically for the GTX 680M. Someone who experienced crashes with the 304.79 beta no longer have such problems when they use 302.77 from that site. Ive just installed those so will see how it goes.

I just wanted to come here and thank LaptopNut for this thread. I recently purchased a 680m for my P150HM, and after getting really nervous about having done something wrong when it did not work initially, I found this thread, downloaded the INF file, and have been enjoying my 680m! Thanks!

302.77 is great for me. 304.79 caused too many issues especially with overclocking. And exactly DEagleson, stability >>> performance.

Glad this helped, I remember how nervous I was after no Drivers would install, including the ones that came with the GPU. It looks like all unofficial 680M users could be assigned the 000.1558 ID too so that works out well.

Back in the day I used to do a little programming and was thinking how fun it would be to make a little program or script that takes an .inf as source and modifies it for use with the 680M.

    LaptopNut and Kingpin et al...

I just want to say thanks for this thread. The instructions on how to edit the inf file were straight forward and easy to follow

FYI...Using these inf editting instructions, 304.79 drivers installed nicely with Clevo 680m in an alienware m17x R3

    Thanks again guys...

    Rep to both of you

I just upgraded my np8170 to a 680m and everytime I install the drivers I just get a blank screen after booting into windows. It displays fine and everything without drivers!

    anyone else have this problem?

is there a way to fix it?

You are having this on a non 3D/120Hz model?

Could you dump your BIOS with this:

    afuwin64.rar

Just use standard settings and hit save.

Can I get a picture of the thermal pad layout of a GTX 680m? Thanks!

Funny that I'm not having any issues with a Quadro k5000m on the GX640. :p

S'pose I could do some of you a favor and sell a few GTX 680m for 600$ or so.

Mosfets, 3x coils and 2x for the memory banks on the top of the card, at least that's what the Clevo heatsink comes with, and that's all that makes sense ;)

So the pads are made by Laird technologies:

After having a look at their website, the blue one is either TFLEX500 with 2.7W/mK or TPLI220 with 6W/mK as there are 2 products that came with the selection of blue colour. Light Green one is probably TFLEX300 with 1.2W/mK.

The big one for Die area should be the grey type:

    Light Grey TFLEX200V0 with 1.1W/mK
    or
    Light Grey TPUTTY504 with 1.8W/mK
    or
    Grey TFLEX HD600 with 3.0W/mK
    or
    Grey TPLI260 with 6.0W/mK
    or
    Dark grey TFLEX700 with 5.0W/mK

Not sure which grey is the one they used for the Die area though. Do hope it's the one with 6W/mK.

Yes, that's what I was talking about. The 3D/120Hz screen or the whole P170HM 3 model for that matter uses a eDP connector internally, while all other P-Series HM AND EM systems still use LVDS. So changing the screen won't do anything for you...the Clevo driver will mostly not output to the eDP port...did you try modding the Dell 17x R4 GTX680 driver, yet?

So I tried using this procedure and failed miserably. When I open my .inf file and search for the strings that need replaced it doesn't find any. I downloaded the .zip .inf files that laptopnut provided and still couldn't find the strings that need replaced. I'm also confused about the hardware ID. It seems I have 4 of them.

    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11BC&SUBSYS_00001462&REV_A1
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11BC&SUBSYS_00001462
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11BC&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11BC&CC_0300

The NVCV file I was edditing (or trying to) is located in this directory C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\306.23\Win8_WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver

I also tried dropping the .inf file directly into this directry then going back to Internaion and trying to install and get the following error.

    driver.jpg

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Are you sure you have a GTX680M? GTX680M's device ID is 11A0, 11BC is a Quadro K5000M...

    Edit:

It seems like you are trying to install a K5000M onto an MSI laptop, MSI has not released any support for the K5000M yet, but Dell has.

The inf for dell (nvdm.inf) contains 2 sections for 2 types of K5000M:

    %NVIDIA_DEV.11BC.053F.1028% = Section189, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11BC&SUBSYS_053F1028

    and

    %NVIDIA_DEV.11BC.153F.1028% = Section172, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11BC&SUBSYS_153F1028

You should probably try both of them and see which one works best for you.

so this is what it shows on the hardware ID when you stick it in?

    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11BC&SUBSYS_00001462&REV_A1
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11BC&SUBSYS_00001462
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11BC&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11BC&CC_0300

They did not send you a GTX 680M, they sent you a K5000M.

GTX 680M in a MSI laptop's ID should be PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_XXXX1462

XXXX depends on the laptop model you inserted the card in.

Personally I'd keep the K5000M as you can use Pro tools with it as well as gaming, however this seller surely didn't do a good job this time by selling you a product that doesn't match the description correctly.

Yeah dude, keep the K5000M and see if you can get it to work. That GPU cost $2500 :D

Why are you editing the INF btw? Are you looking to install geforce drivers? There are quite a few drivers for the K5000M out now. Why not try the Quadro drivers instead first?

Here is the lastest one. See if its works

He thought it was a Nvidia GTX 680M so tried to install those and they won't install unless modified in the P170HM.

Now it looks like its a Quadro of course. I would probably keep it as well depending on what the resellers response was.

After all, gaming performance is said to be about the same.

I wouldn`t even try to call the reseller if I were him. I would be extremely happy about it since A)its the same performance as 680M B)It cost $2500 vs 680M with $799. C) You get huge performance boost with professional hardware compared to 680M D) If you`re not happy with the Quadro performance you can still use the INF method to install the Geforce 680M drivers or flash the vbios to the 680M.

This is a big win-win situation for jwimsett in my opinion (if the Quadro drivers work) :)

That's correct but I believe in honesty even if I would end up gaining due to a resellers mistake, but others may not think twice about it.

Therefore it all depends on an individuals philosophy and moral compass.

Another thing ive noticed over the years is that you can end up gaining through honesty and losing through karma.

I have never heard of a reseller making a mistake like that though, would have laughed if the original order was for a GTX 485m :p

Yes true words LaptopNut. Each to its own. :)

@jwimsett: good luck. Stop messing with the inf files and just try the quadro driver first. I have the K4000M I might try in my GT70 so this is exciting for me. If your K5000M works, mine might too. :)

I've decided to contact the seller to return it. I don't know enough to deal with it, and there isn't many support resources for an oddball card. The 680m works better for me as there are threads like this explaining how to do things (even though I couldn't correctly modify the .inf file anyway.).

    View attachment nvdm.zip

I did a little inf modding based on the hardware ID you provided, replace the nvdm.inf under this directory and install again:

    C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\305.93\Win8_WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver

Please note that this .inf is only for driver 305.93 WHQL.

Driver installed and is recognized in Device Manager.

Tried 1 game (Alan Wake) seemed very sluggish. I couldn't see the FPS as Afterburner wont work correctly with this card. It won't allow me to setup a fan profile and won't display anything on screen display. I ran 3dmark 11 but got this error: Workload work failed with error message: window_focus_lost: Display resolution changed. I was getting single FPS per scene , except physics prior to that

I set everything to run with high performance card in nVidia control panal - same result

That's ok. I already deleted all drivers and pulled the card out of my laptop. I plan on sending it back to the sender who says they have more "GTX 680m's." I plan on getting a refund as I have lost confidence in them.

    Thanks for the offer though.

I was using the section for Dell's K5000M, since the .inf's for MSI and Clevo don't have it yet. Probably need to wait until Clevo/MSI add the K5000M into sales standard.
