    I have an ASUS G72GX:
    -6GB DDR2 1066MHz RAM
    -Nvidia GTX 260M 1GB
    -Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 @ 2.53GHz
    -500GB HDD

Suddenly games just don't run as well. Just one or two days ago, I was able to run Crysis on all very high, with the exception of shaders and shadows at a pretty good fps. Suddenly, running the game at all high results in lag. Same with OFDR and every other game I have. I haven't messed around with hardware much, except for using the built-in CPU overclocker that OCs to 2.9Ghz when playing games. Is there any reason for this slowdown?

Did you change your "power plan" settings from "High performance" to "Power saver" by mistake?

Have you recently woken the laptop from sleep mode? This often screws with graphics drivers and causes poor performance. Try a reboot.

Also make sure you don't have any unnecessary applications running in the background.

I was getting horrible lag one time, and I checked to see what was running, and forgot that I have Tune-up Utilities to run scans every week.

If rebooting and checking the power plan do nothing, try to go back on a Restore Point

This was my first thought as well. Checking for any background scans and ending them may also help.

After checking to make sure you are plugged in and running in High Performance Mode, try running the Windows 7 Defragmenter on your hard drive. Let it complete and then reboot.

Also, consider downloading software such as GPUZ and CoreTemp to keep track of the temperature of your hardware components. It is possible your components are overheating and causing poor performance.

to be honest, all these answers are very helpful, but there is just that time in the life of a new laptop where your performance just goes downhill.

Believe it or not, i was able to play Crysis warhead on high at constant 30fps on my laptop (read my sig) then after 2 months, i wasn't able anymore, so i reinstalled vista, still to no avail. I have no idea why to this day.

Clean your fans. It might or might not be overheating hardware, but it could never hurt to check. Especially since the GTX260m in that model has a tendency to reach very high temperatures.

overheating is the real problem.. always clean fans , undervolt CPU and use a notebook cooling pad if ur laptop gets high temps in gaming.. mine does.

I also would recommend cleaning everything out... Reapply some thermal paste inside also if you can
