I want to buy a really great game for under £5 ($10), can be any genre. I'm looking for suggestions because there are a lot of games under £5 now and I know there are some good games but I want to try and get the best game possible for that price :)

Lol well guess what crash :p I've had it for over 5 years, finished it on PC and PS2 and play on multiplayer regularly so I think that puts that out of the equation :)

    WarRock.
    Free.
Small lag issues, poor graphics, some hackers, but great fun regardless.

Mafia? Anachronox? Far Cry? Neverwinter Nights? Morrowind? XIII?
all are 1p shy of a fiver in the Sold Out range at the moment..

    http://www.sold-out.co.uk/allproducts.asp

actually I've got to say Anachronox bugged me that much I never finished it.. but I know a few people who say it's a brilliant game.

dill0n - Apparently Warlock was made in 1988 lol :p

sasanac - I've ordered Far Cry already for about 2 pounds from Amazon. Should be here tomorrow. Is Anachronox a RPG?

yup it works a bit like Final Fantasy in the combat bits ie turn based combat. It was done by Ion Storm (as in Deus Ex though you probably don't need reminding lol). There's a stack of info on it on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anachronox I enjoyed the game for the story but I'm not keen on turn based combat in rgps or rather I don't like the Final Fantasy approach to turn based combat! I don't mind simultaneous turn based as in Baldurs Gate etc.

IMO Warrock was very disappointing, has a lot of bias towards pay players (for example, they can buy an extra weapon slot that holds a minigun. In addition to all the other equipment a class gets, which is also better if you pay extra), isn't worth paying for to get that extra power, and has some annoying lag issues in spite of your computers performance or connection to the host.

FEAR Combat is nice and free, and is the full version of FEAR's multiplayer component.

Also, the Battlefield 2 demo is still populated if you don't mind only being able to play one map and not being able to get unlocks.

I think you can probably buy the original Dawn Of War for cheap now. It's entertaining, though I wish the cutscenes and story for the single player were less...crap.

    Grim Fandango

The longest journey (not ! Dreamfall)

They are both totally awesome adventuregames that should be easy to find and be really cheap. They might be old, but adventure games, with their detailed prerendered backgrounds, age really well, despite the actual characters having a low polygon-count by today's standards (though they still have 10 times the personality of any recent game I can think of, largely due to superior voiceacting).

Swords of the New World is free up to a certain level, not sure how far though. If you like the FF artwork then thats another plus.

RTCW: ET is another free online game, along with America's Army.

Some cheapy games for 10 bucks are Lord of the Rings: BfmE 2, and AoE: Collector's Edition you may be able to find some Sim City games also.

I don't know if the prices are the same in Europe though.

Taking a look at CompUSA dot com (do they have a CompUK over there?)...

Deer Hunter 5 was an instant classic...topped the charts for weeks due to heavy sales at the Wal-Mart...and yours for a mere $8...

Silent Storm clocks in at $9...turn based WW2 strategy...good game...

Battlefield 2 for $10...multiplayer FPS in modern setting...I thought it was the worst of the Battlefield series (followed closely by Vietnam although helicopters are fun after you figure 'em out) but even the worst of that series is a lot of fun...

Command & Conquer Collection $10...but you don't seem to like RTS...

Tiger Woods 07 for $10...even my wife likes this one...she spent almost an entire day creating a look-a-like golfer...

    Half Life 2 Episode 1 $10...'nuf said...

I've played on RTCW: ET but got owned most of the time. Probably because I was playing on my MacBook with a trackpad lol. I might give it another go when my laptop arrives. I was considering AoE: Collector's Edition and Battlefield 2. Is Battlefield 2 definitely worth getting? Do a lot of people still play on MP?

Seconded. however, may i ask you what is the problem with dreamfall? True, it is more of an ''interactive movie'' than a game, but still the best game ever imho.
I found the story much more touching and impressive than that of the original.

Oh, and don't forget about syberia 1&2. Both splendid games.

And if you're looking for a freebie, try trackmania nations.

Oh, sorry, i didn't notice that you were looking for budget games. I don't know it's exact price, but it's newer than most of the games the others suggested, so it might be more expensive.

I'm not sure, I liked it because I like the tabletop game but the fact that it's filled with ridiculous combat is quite a draw. It's just damn entertaining, though may be overwhelming for some.

The Age of Empires or AOE2 series (w/ expansions) or the Empire Earth series (haven't played much of this, bought EE + expansion for $8 post tax yesterday). The best place to go digging for cheap games is the used section of EB Games (if you have that in your area).
