I'm really looking forward to the release of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion but based on the stats that I saw for it, it's going to be really power-hungry. The XBOX 360 is currently having trouble with some aspects of the game and the XBOX puts most laptops to shame in respect to the processor and GPU. Is it possible that there are any laptops out now or coming out in the near future that will be able to handle this game that aren't in the $4K-5K range?

The Dell e1705 is a good place to start. It offers a powerful GPU and is relatively cost effective.

try to avoid alienware, even though their specs look good. I'd recommend Dell XPS or the 9400 as well as the one brian suggested

    Seconding the Sager.

    What is your budget, exactly?

7800gtx is the best graphics card for laptops at the moment, so if u can afford it - buy it! (7800 is not good for portability and battery life tho :( )

really, the cheapest solution for you to enjoy elder scroll iv at full detail with a steady framerate is 360.
7800go gtx may come close to it, but we have to see the actual performance after it's released.

Yeah, I was kind of thinking along those lines...I guess the 7800 GTX will be more than enough to play Oblivion, i just wanted a second opinion. This game will have really high system requirements but it has to have some reasonable limit in order to make a market for it. The Sager 5720 seems to be the best gaming laptop for the price right now in what I am looking for (not so huge that it looks like a cube but powerful enough that it will be able to handle games this year and next year). As for getting an XBOX 360 just to play one game...it's not that critical that I be able to run the game at max everything, just well enough so that it looks "nice." That and I need a new laptop because the one I'm using now (Gateway 450e) really needs to be moved to an assisted living facility.

Have you checked out the Acer TravelMate 8200? That is a very powerful 15.4", with Intel's latest Core Duo processor and the next-generation ATI Radeon X1600 256MB card. Very powerful indeed.

If you wait a few months, Clevo is going to update the M560A (aka the Sager 5320) to the Intel Core Duo and the ATI X1600.

The X1600 might be powerful but the 7800GTX runs loops around it.

True, but the X1600 produces a lot less heat and comes in a smaller form factor, which is the reason why I suggested it.

It can handle every game I think at medium-high settings, and will be 'modern' for a while, since it has next generation features.
