What's the absolute best horror/survival game? Has to be playable on a 8600M GT... preferably at decent settings at least so I can feel some immersion.

Something along the lines of Resident Evil...

Stalker: Shadows of Chernobyl - plays very well on my GDDR3 8600M, I would recommend getting a few mods, I feel it enhances the game play a good deal...

RE4 is one of the best games ever made, period. I got it for Wii and it's just... well... wow, it's hard to describe. Only problem is I hear the PC port job was sub-par.

    Silent Hill is amazing.

However, it would be extremely difficult to play on a PC. The controls are awkward, and there are no widescreen resolutions. Plus, I hear that the older ones won't run on Vista.

I want to get Resident Evil 4, but I hear the PC version is terrible. Damn console ports! :D

Res Evil 4 hrm...any other zombie-overrunning-the-world type games?

I finished RE4 on PC last week and It was my first time, The game itself is fantastic but doesn't support mouse, only keyboard which is horrible, so gamepad is mandatory. Textures and FMVs are very low-res and blurry but there are some mods out there that fix both (The texture patch v2 by Albert Marin Garau is a must have, replaces all textures and some models with GameCube version), With those mods the game looks fantastic, The game itself is more action/run n gun than horror though, it has won most of the GOTY awards in 2005.
P.S. 8600M GT have no problem with RE4.

Cold Fear. Released in 2005, but still up to date in terms of graphics and gameplay (which is the most important in this type of game). Also, it is perfectly playable on 8600GT.

hl2 has its fair share of zombies. STALKER is another good choice.
