So, I figure I'd get more use out of a GPU than a DVD drive, files can be sent over my network or usb sticks, now removing it would free a substantial amount of space, has anyone done, or tried, to put a GPU in it's place? sorry, not very familiar with laptop motherboards and if they leave any open connections for such a thing.
Wish I coulda just upgraded my laptop before I got it but the price of a gpu on a laptop shoots it up atleast an additional 300$

Not possible.
To below: I think he's asking if you can atually take out the DVD drive and somehow fit in an extra GPU. That would be basically impossible unless you actually redesigned the motherboard and cooling. -
?
If i understood correctly, i would say the GPU would be better upgrade for games and graphic intensive work. What upgrade do u get for gpu for 300? It depends -

wait- are you trying to buy a new laptop without a dvd drive, or..
are you trying to take the dvd drive out of your laptop and put a gpu in instead?
wow, nope that is definitely not going to happen. sorry. hah.

this is crazy PICS if get it done lol, wich is never, sorry nice try tho

Interesting...
Please post pics when Frankenstein is "ALIVE!!" -
Don't you need a motherboard or something that supports multiple GPUs? Which would basically mean a whole new laptop...

It's not going to work unless you have an empty GPU slot in your notebook and somehow acquire the OEM-specific GPU module that would've gone in there had you paid the extra 300 bucks.
It wouldn't be in your DVD-ROM drive slot. Getting it functioning in there would be near suicide, but impressive. -
Well, technically you could put a GPU in the DVD-ROM bay. It won't do you any good though; might as well make it into a keychain instead since that might at least attract (or repel) the opposite gender.
Anyway, I've never heard of the DVD-ROM bay being used for a modular GPU - however it sounds like a decent idea for swappable low-end graphics cards. Probably too slim to fit a cooler large enough for higher-end cards though. It'll probably never happen though; the notebook manufacturers don't want to put in that effort and/or there's no demand for it - probably the same reasons why modular and upgradable graphics for laptops is essentially dead.
Sometimes you'll find options for putting a hard drive or an extra battery in that bay though. -
Swapping GPU for DVD ROM.
