Hey folks, another question: I read that the 430m has an onboard graphics solution, and the 5870 is supposed to allow you to manually switch between itself and the onboard chipset to save battery power. Does this require additional software? Is it tucked away somewhere in the Catalyst driver?

As long as you have drivers for both there is no need for any other software. You can go into the CCC or even right click on the desktop,(Not sure if all laptops that have it) and even a switch on the laptop itself.

Not true - it does that on yours because the y460 is a switchable graphics enabled laptop. I don't know which machine the op has, but there isn't a laptop out there with a 5870 and switchable graphics, so no, he can't switch between them. I wish it were as simple as just having the drivers for both!

what ur saying is quite true however

    1. The intel GMA HD is disabled in most cases.
    2. No laptop with a 5870 has switchable graphics.
    3. You can't do anything to get switchable graphics if the manufacturer has disabled it.
