See the GOG.com homepage for a countdown. According to rockpapershotgun, System Shock 2 will finally be available on GOG.com, and legitimately available for purchase for the first time in well over a decade. This may be the greatest Valentine's Day gift to single, basement-dwelling gamers everywhere. Jokes aside, I'm not the only one who's been waiting over eight years for this.

I've never played System Shock 2 and I feel like that is a huge blow to my gamer cred. I will have to purchase it immediately.

This should be the perfect thing to occupy some of my wait for Bioshock Infinite.

Man, GREAT game! I remember picking up a copy at release, still have it down in the basement somewhere.... Has gotten a bit tough to play over the years with OS changes and newer tech/stability issues but there is still a fantastic community supporting it with mods. Great to have it on GOG.com now for easy DRM free access and updates to work on newer systems! Definitely a must pick up for any serious gamer. I remember hooking my old desktop I had built at the time to my then HUGE 26" TUBE TV via a "super hi-tech" S-video cable and playing in the dark with the lights out... fond memories.

On a side note, there was a major update/patch released a few months back that actually made the game perfectly playable and super stable with better graphics on new systems. I've yet to actually see who developed it, still a mystery best I can tell as it used raw code and is for all practical purposes a modern day patch/update to the game engine that could only be done by the developers. It's rumored to have been released by some past Looking Glass employees that knew the original coding. It literally turned a game that wouldn't run without heavy mods to a game that will perfectly play on modern hardware and resolutions. Highly recommend if you are a fan of the game or have avoided it after missing it the first go round due to issues. They also released an updated demo for those curious.

    System Shock 2.4 and Thief 2 1.19

Definitely a must buy, good find!

EDIT: On a side note, is anyone else having issues loading www.gog.com ? Every time I try and go there today it crashes IE 10. Running Windows 8 64. I can load the page on my Samsung Note 2, and it loads fine in a virtualbox of XP using IE.... confused what's problem. All other pages load fine, and gog.com normally does as well.

@be77solo, well your problem is two fold - You are using Internet explorer AND windows 8! I kid, I kid.

I had problems loading it earlier today on firefox, maybe just due to server overload. Having no problems now.

I watched someone do a Let's Play video of this game. Not really my cup of tea but it was fun to watch someone else go through it.

I wasn't in tune with the latest PC games when it came out, and by the time I was aware of it, it was nowhere to be found. I'll be a first-timer as well.

This is probably the biggest release for GOG.com since the site opened - it's by far the most-requested game on the site. It makes sense that they'll have some server overload for the next couple days as people flock to the site to buy and download the game.

HA, maybe so! First reason I've had to try another browser on my current machine, and Chrome loads it fine... I have no idea why but have to think it's something to do with their current countdown going that's not compatible in some weird way. I've never previously had any issue loading their site but as of today no matter what I do my IE 10 won't load it and just crashes.

And oddly even though I already own the original game still excited about the launch! :) It's worth trying for any on the fence!

Awesome, I may pick it up as well. Wonder how well my GTX 680m will manage? j/k

Anyone who likes Gog.com DRM free games and enjoys classic games, buy it even if you don't play it. Show your support so they continue to secure rights to these classic games that have been shelved for WAY too long.

I sure hope my new GTX670 can handle it.

I can't wait to play this. Deus Ex is one of my favorite games of all time, so I'm sure I'm going to love SS2

Is there a good graphics mod pack that covers everything from textures to lighting and high resolutions? I'd rather not go in blind with a game I'm not familiar with and try to piecemeal things together.

It's sad that 3D games like this one rarely if ever age all that well. I don't think I'd appreciate it as much playing it for the first time today (despite SHODAN being all kinds of awesome).

Keeping in mind what I just said, you still chose wrong.

This Reddit thread has a few links that should get you started:

I think this one has actually done pretty decent with the latest patch (not mod) that came out late last year.... it up'd the poly count limits and now natively supports modern resolutions and widescreens and some new engine features. I was quite impressed with the improvement and how it looked. I agree some games are just too tough to look at to be enjoyable after we are spoiled by modern games, but this one is an exception I feel.

For anyone curious snag the SS2 version 2.4 Demo linked on page one I posted, it will give you a taste of the graphics stock with the newest patch. Of course higher res models and textures are available if you want more!

And for those that couldn't sleep last night due to my problem loading gog.com, all is better now! ;) Must have been something to do with their countdown splash screen.

For me the problem with old games is usually the gameplay systems and the UI. I actually don't remember much from playing System Shock 2 beyond "haaa-ha-haa-hacker", but looking at screenshots it seems like the inventory management will be one of the places where it'll show its true age.

Well, went ahead and snagged the copy off of gog.com.... running great! For others that want all the upgraded goodies in an easy to get package, check out this thread, it give easy steps and list the updates you'll want to make for a great playthrough. You'll be up and running with high res textures/tweaks/and better AI models in no time:

    System Shock2 FAQ - patches, mods, recommendations, page 1 - Forum - GOG.com

Just spend an hour or so playing, gotta say I still feel the game has held up really well, looking forward to a full playthrough again. Add the updates/mods on top of the latest patch (patch already included in the gog.com release) and it's amazing how well it does still play. Not sure how but it has the space survival horror side nailed like not much else I've ever played. Incredible atmosphere.

I'll check GOG later when I can access the site (working overtime and it's blocked here), but in the meantime, I'll dredge this up to ask here:

Anybody have any success binding commands to the function keys (f1-f12) in System Shock 2? When I try to bind quicksave and quickload to f5 and f9 it recognizes the keystroke (closing out the 'bind' dialogue) but doesn't change the listed bindings in the controls menu. I've got them set to home and end right now, but those are way over on the other side of the keyboard so I'd prefer a better option.
