for some reason when im joining a server and it just finishes loading the graphic will freeze and ill get usually a looping audio, i have to then ctr+alt+del and it usually says somehing about hl2.exe stopped responding. i dont know why this only happens on TF2 SOMETIMES, alot of times it works though. when the map changes it also does it sometimes too.. anyone hve similar problem or can help, thanks

I don't have that problem but whenever I exit out of TF2 I get a "hl2.exe stopped responding" message. It doesn't happen in-game. I don't know if that's related or not to your problem though...

EDIT: Oh and I forgot to add that Valve is releasing an update to TF2 this upcoming week so perhaps that will fix it.

I had this problem when my laptop was set to power-saving mode. I set my power options to performance, and the game freezing on map load issue went away.

This happens to me too, though it didn't before my latest reformat. Two things have changed: My processor (Athlon 64 X2 4200+ -> Phenom X4 9850 BE) and my OS (XP Pro x64 -> Vista Ultimate x64). Since I doubt we're all using Phenoms while getting this problem, what OSes are you guys on? Could be another part of the Vista barrel-o-monkeys.

Hmm well I had problems with Steam and Steam games when I had UAC off. However, since my last clean install I kept UAC on and I haven't had any problems with Steam.

User Account Control, the feature that asks you if you're TOTALLY, COMPLETELY, POSITIVELY, REALLY REALLY, 100%, ABSOLUTELY, DEADLY SURE you want to create that folder there. And then again if you're TOTALLY, COMPLETELY, POSITIVELY, REALLY REALLY, 100%, ABSOLUTELY, DEADLY SURE you want to rename said folder. And again that you're TOTALLY, COMPLETELY, POSITIVELY, REALLY REALLY, 100%, ABSOLUTELY, DEADLY SURE you want to actually copy those files there.

I don't know if this is the same problem. But how long do you let that looping audio (when you think the game is locked up) go for? Whenever I alt-tab out, and go back in, I will get that and it can take up to a few minutes for the game to come back. But it doesn't crash.

This happens with every instance of TF2 that I put up, but ONLY TF2, not DOD:S or CS:S or HL2 or any other Source game.

I've encountered the OP's problem whenver I press the escape key to move past the creepy picture at startup or before the game loads; the game will crash and vista will be like "you screwed up".

That's why I've just bought a copy of XP; I'm sick of Vista doing what it wants, when it wants, if it wants. Like how often I'll right click within my C: drive and Vista will just close the folder and reload my desktop...

    But I digress.

TF2 is much different then CS:S, HL2 etc.... I and most others consider it broken right now. TF2 is crazy CPU intensive, and it does not work with alot of dual-core CPU's correctly. I don't know, maybe they will fix it in the Pyro patch (problems starting happening after the november patch though). I love the game, but it pisses me off.

Did the OP of this thread ever enable those multithreads and experiemental dual core features in the console of TF2? If so, that may be your problem since locking up and loops in audio is usually accompanied by enabling those commands that let dual core and multithreading be turned on.

That is what I am just about to suggest, the command is actually mat_queue_mode, set it to -1, using "mat_queue_mode -1", without quotes.

Your system specs may help us as well.

God forbid if we know if you're using a GMA 900.

True, but the OP problem seems not to be a performance issue. Still, knowing the specs is always helpful.
