Source games use a lot of files in common so since you already have Portal, TF2 won't be a big download at all.

I have the many other Source games, and my TF2 install says 7072. I don't know if that's including shared files or not though.

It includes shared files -- if you went to download Left 4 Dead it would be a small fraction of the full download because of all the Source shared GCFs.

That makes sense. It'll still be several GB though... I can't imagine the shared files taking up more than half of the total space.

depends on the game. tf2 after already installing portal wont be too heavy. they use the same engine. id say half the assets are downloaded already. 3.5GB more for tf2.

Team Fortress 2 is an extra 3260 MB if you already have Portal, or HL2 ep 2 installed. Without those installed it's close to 8GB.

At full speed on a 768k DSL connection it would take 22 hours and 50 minutes to download TF2 if you do not have any other source game installed.

Even if you buy the game retail, you will still have to download the updates for the game, which are an extra several hundred megabytes.

Even after installing TF2 from the CD, Steam will need to install several hundred MBs of updates for TF2. Couldn't you just start the download before you go to bed and it'll be almost done by morning? Unless of course you have dial-up :p

The retail DVD won't reflect the 50% discount as Steam online, FYI. Just leave it downloading overnight as others have said, then make a backup so you have it on discs from now on.
