I'm waiting from Valve themselves before I jump into any conclusion. Though it would make sense to do it that way since they have the store inside TF2.
I recall reading somewhere awhile back or maybe it was on a podcast, where Valve said they would not do a free 2 play model on TF2 because of hackers, where if they get banned on one account they can just make another one. So, I don't know... -
Is official... yep... is F2P xD
-
Awesome.
TF2 is lot's of fun. The best F2P game to date imo -
I have a hunch it's gonna become a complete n00bfest.
-
Beaten, lol
-
up for medic :O!
-
That's what I was worried about too :S
However, can't complain about a bunch of free kills
I'm surprised they didn't release it as free sooner, with how much they charge for the ingame stuff. -

VAC is not a good anticheat system for free2play titles. Yikes.
-
WOW! This is awesome news! Been waiting to grab this title for a while
Can't beat the Price
-
This is a stroke of genius, on Valve's part.
Think about it, before this announcement, as it stands TF2 isn't getting sales any more (at one point it's being sold for $2.50).
With it going F2P, more people will play ofc, a LOT more. After a while many of them will convert to premium aka profits. Also the hat system means more people will be motivated to purchase other future games on Steam for the sake of getting exclusive hats. Last but not least, more respect gained for Valve in the gaming community.
They had nothing to lose with TF2, now they win everything. It's an impeccable plan. -
I know especially when I mainly play Rush mode and all I see are people playing snipers on offense!
-
The meet the medic trailer has made me re-addicted to TF2.
Darn you ASUS and your RMA's... -
Also, this trailer and Saint's Row the Third trailer are the most badbutt ever made...

Indeed it is! : ) -
I wonder how badly or good this will affect the trading market with refined metal and keys pretty much being the standard currency.
-
BUT, you don't know how many n00bs would become terrible adversaries. I don't believe I would play much, because of my bandwidth limit. But there would be many who will be n00bs only for TF2, having a lot of experience in other multiplayer games.
A couple of years ago, on my ex workplace, we used to play OpenArena on a Lan network at lunch time. It was fun, "rocket launcher" party. Suddenly, a couple of new partners joined the party, one of them an expert at CS. He DO beat us all because the CS playing style was different (we didn't play CS ever), he mainly used the railgun and has a sharp shot plus speed. That made some of us evolve, trying other styles, others leave, stating they were not on "the level". I evolve and ended having a superb rival... a couple of weeks later, he bites the dust on my railgun shots (which I practiced A LOT on that 2 weeks, thanks to him xD)... Right now, I barely have time to play, BUT I think that a couple of weeks can make anyone evolve... or leave.
Just that
-
There is absolutely NO reason not to play this game now. Best multiplayer game EVER in my opinion.
BTW - if anybody wants to try this game out & wants someone to play with and/or help them out, feel free to PM me and I'll add you to friends. -
I dunno. It's a twitch-fest and I got bored after a couple dozen hours of game time.
-
You should try playing more Rush mode!
-
As a TFC veteran, I can say TF2 is way different (I miss my grenades).
Still a great game, had a lot of fun in my first hour of playing. -
I don't think I got even one kill in my first hour playing xD
Although, I can't say I've ever had more fun getting slaughtered heh -
Keep in mind that with this game, K/D ratio is of absolutely NO importance. Also, "twitch-fest"? What? That's like the last word I would use to describe this game. The only class that is anything like a twitch shooter is sniper. Also, they didn't put grenades into TF2 because they were spammed so much in TFC.
-
After playing a good 20+ hours I still wouldn't last more than ten seconds usually. It's just spawn, die, spawn, die, spawn, die, ad nauseum.
-

It is indeed a hard game to get used to in the beginning, but if you find the right tactics and maybe play with a team there wont be too much of a hassle : ) -
If valve try anything like what's happening with COD (payed DLC packs etc.) then I'm gone.
To me, the whole idea of the mann co. store is a kick in the face. I worked hard to earn my weapons, and then to see valve selling them for 30p is pretty offensive imo.
As for the oncoming n00bfest though, lets just hope it's like the mac update and dies down after a month or so. Easy kills is one thing, but after an hour or so of endless slaughter with little challenge, it gets kinda boring. If TF2 had a a basic player rating system (not like COD though, I don't care what XP you are) then we could filter out worthy opponents making for a more equal and challenging game. All it would really ave to be is a number between 1 to 4 (class 1 is a complete n00b, class 2 is average laid back gameplay, class 3 is above average and class 4 would be for higher end players). -
I really don't see what everyone's complaining about. Making the game available to more people isn't going to hurt the rest of us. If you're worried about not having a challenge, go play a lobby match or something; you won't find any F2P newbies there.
Personally, I'm happy that everyone gets a chance to play now. TF2 is easily the most fun I've ever had in a multiplayer game, and I'm happy to share that with everyone. -
I think HT pretty much described it accurately. Really it's not a hard game and takes no getting used to whatsoever (except for maybe the spy class). It's about the most unabashedly mindless twitch-based noobfest out there.
TFC require much more skill and didn't have hats. TF2 is just a pander to the masses and going F2P is the next logical step. -
Why is it hard for noobs? I'm downloading it right now but it seems everyone who's starting to play today gets spawn-camped or something. Is it that horrible?
-
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
There is some getting used to, for example with the soldier, you can use your rockets to jump and exploit that and there are map recognition to learn and all sorts of stuff. You need to learn how to use your class, so i would say there is some learning to do.... -
I see they toned down the medic. Medics used to be good all around classes that could be used for offense and support (TFC). Now (imo) they have been relocated to the support role. I'm not saying bad, just different (I guess makes more sense since "medic")
-
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
Yeah they indeed have the support role, but they get points for each kill that the person you heal kills, so its okay : ) -
I wonder what will happen to the retail TF2 game.
Amazon.com: Team Fortress 2: Pc: Windows XP: Video Games -
Well, there's some F2P games that are sold in retail stores, apparently for the box and disk I guess.
-
If you buy the retail game you get the premium membership (just like everybody else who had already bought it, or anybody who buys anything form the store).
-
I decided to download again and give it a run for a little bit and see how things are now. Tired of Bad Company 2.
Strange though, it'll start at peak download speed ( ~ 2 MB/s) for a good ten minutes then drop to 100-200 KB/s. The only thing I don't like about the Valve games is they never backup properly. Hate to download 10GB just to play TF2 and to download it again to install it on my desktop. I've backed it up in the past, restored it to another PC, and it still had to download most all the game. -
Rocket jumping? That reminds me of Quake... I think I'll give it a shot again (Quake xD)
-
Are the servers down? I was playing a game and then got dumped. Restarted computer and got back in and no servers are showing up.
-
I can join games in my history, but that's about it. If there was an update, it probably broke something.
-
Ah, so since I haven't played, I have no history, so I'm screwed for now. Although, it showed three people in my friends list, but all servers were full. Then when I went to join finally it said error contacting server.
So they make it free to play, so all the new players can't even play? Wow, great idea there Valve. -
Probably server overload from all the noobs.
I still play from time to time, although FPS's aren't my thing. -
Looks like there is a distinction between F2P players and Premium: Team Fortress 2: Free-to-Play FAQ
-
Oooh, a hat!
-
Just played it for the last 4 hours with a friend. Wow this game is good. So far my most played classes are Heavy and Pyro, record being a 10-kill streak on Pyro.
-
I can't hit crap. It's like Bad Company 2 all over again. Blam blam blam to the face of someone and they don't die. Granted I only had one server I could play on, the one I managed to join for ten seconds earlier today because can't find regular servers and that's the only one in my history, and have a 150+ ping when I'm on it.
-
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
Seeing as this is nothing major or really game changing i think they have done a good job of making this a F2P! *Applauds valve* -
Well headshots don't do anything unless you are sniper or a spy using the ambassador*, so most of the time you're better off going for the body. Also, if you're in the U.S./Canada I can P.M. you some server IP's from my favorites list. They all have great communities and play great maps. I've been having problems with the server list since the update too (thankfully I pretty much play on the same server all the time anyways), so it's probably not a F2P issue. Valve tends to break stuff with major updates (and this is one of the biggest so far), but they usually fix them within the next couple of days.
*or if you reflect an arrow into someone's head as a pyro.
-
Try Pyro or Heavy, they raked up lots of kills for me (best one for me is 9 kills kill-steak with my heavy, second best = 7 with pyro).
-
You're not going to have good hit registration with 150 ping, no matter what. Wait until you can find a better server; when I have actual internet and not my crappy phone 3G, I never have trouble finding one under 50 ping, and most days I can find them under 30.
-
Looks like they updated it finally.
It even runs on my netbook with SU4100 (1.3GHz dual core) and 4500MHD. I overclock the CPU to 1.6GHz, and running at 1024x576 with most detail at low. Pretty flexible engine.
TF2 going F2P? :O
