Look what I got running ...I had put many, many hours into this game when I was little. I beat it two years ago and just got around to installing it once more.
I have not been able to wipe the smile off my face for the past 25 minutes.
Let's hear your TIE Fighter stories! Post up screens if you have them. I will be taking more as I progress.

The keyboard commands ... so many, but they're coming back to me fast. You don't forget your instincts, right?
The printed manual is essential.

I remember this game.... good ol days.
P.S. Chaz I need to report somebody for double posting
P.P.S. - Darkforces was one of my fav games from this era and somewhere in my room should be buried a 1" thick book of all the Starwars tech that gave all the stats/specs on all the ships and buildings etc. It broke all the tie fighters down into blueprints and gave weapons, size, weight, it was so awesome and I dont even remember where it came from. -

I just completed the first mission ... primary and secondary mission objectives completed. I have a feeling installing this game around midnight might have been a less-than-stellar idea. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
DAMMMMMMMMMNNNN!
Just loved the game, it was my second starwars title that I got! And the 3rd that I played!
This is just lovely, gotta remember all those keyboard commands now! -
X-Wing and Tie fighter were great. I remember my sophomore year of high school playing that game. Good times.
Best memory, getting all the cool tatoos from the Emperor. -
I will be adding this post a reference in my classic games post. I just ordered the X-wing trilogy which should be interesting to get running. I assume you bought/are running the original dos version of tie fighter?
-
I was so hoping this was about a release on GOG.
Now I am sad...
-
Must find my discs. I think I had this on floppy though?
-
X-Wing > TIE Fighter.
I didn't like how TIE Fighter quickly became all about the TIE Advanced and TIE Defender, one of which barely appeared in the original movie trilogy and one of which didn't. And I didn't like how, in TIE Fighter, you'd sometimes take down a half-dozen capital ships with a single fighter in some of the later missions. I thought X-Wing did a better job of reflecting the feel of the movies and getting the balance of fighters versus capital ships right.
Now, that's not to say that TIE Fighter was bad. It was, by any measure, awesome. It's just that I think X-Wing was awesome-er.
-
Lol, TIE Fighter was WAY better than X-Wing.
But Freespace 2 is better than both, especially with the opensource mods and new graphics. -
I remember finding Dark Forces at the Star Wars gift shop in Disney World. I didn't buy it there, but I ordered it (FROM A CATALOG!) when I got home.
I still have never played TIE Fighter, but I remember my dad bringing home X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter because he thought I'd like it. Good times.
Space sims are too rare now. What happened to the games like Freespace and Wing Commander and X-Wing? -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I am playing TIE Fighter via DOSBOX. I think the version I have can run from Windows 95/98 though, it is the Collector's edition CD-ROM. -
X-Wing was my first "multiplayer game". A friend of mine had it but he had a very crappy joystick. Flying and using the keyboard at the same time was almost impossible. So we played together. He was the helmsman and I was tactical/ops.
Some years later I had X-Wing vs. Tie which was fun too but not as much as X-Wing. I somehow found it wrong to bring down multiple Star Destroyers or Calamaris with a single Y-Wing or Gunboat. -

They need to make simulators like these again...! The only time where one can truly be, an Imperial scum.
I still have my joystick for X-Wing Alliance..!If a new game that's quite similar to these 3 games, I'd drop all my money on it.

If you like these kinds of games check out Starwraith Games: Space-sims for the PC, Combat / Trader Simulations, Free Demo Downloads - StarWraith 3D Games
They have a some 4x games (Evochron) and space shooter (Arvoch). Very well done Indie games. Run well on lesser systems as well. Even supports TrackIR.
Also Vega Strike: http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/ -

Oh the memories this brings back
. I broke a few joysticks back in the day playing this as a kid (and not from mishandling, just from using them to death).
I've got my original box with everything in it. I love the "tutorial" that was embedded in the Marak(?) Steele story and how it had renders and screenshots in with it. I wish they did stuff like that now instead of all the in game tutorials but alas, that's a lost age. Have to have the manual like you mentioned Charles if you're playing the original release, since it has the copy protection characters in the footnotes of each page.
I can remember going to the local Walmart and buying this as a kid. Back when the PC section of electronics was HUGE!I also remember pestering my parents to drive me about 30 miles away to buy Defender of the Empire, the first expansion pack for it. I have the collector's edition CD release too, it's the version based on the XvT engine so graphics and music are different (loss of iMuse but "better" graphics). I can remember dual booting Windows 2000 and 98 at one point just to play it again.
It's funny that you had the urge to play this again, just the other week I was telling my dad how I will randomly want to yell out "Full Speed to Killamar!" and why. Anyone that's played it a few times will get that -
I have xwing and tie figter (CE editions) in boxes... + the receipt for xwing along with some other goodies from 1996... I wonder if the MIR is still valid
odd note... I just got freespace 2 free with a logitech forcefeedback joystick I bough.
Don't both games work on XP without any tweaking? -
-
If you are using the very original version of tie fighter (resolution should be limited to to 320x200, where as the collector's edition bumped it up to 640x480, it also upgraded the graphics and made a tweak to the soundtrack).
The X-wing collector's edition/ X wing trilogy further upgraded the graphics to use then newly released X Wing v Tie Fighter engine.
If you are playing the X Wing Collector's edition/X Wing trilogy simple apply this patch and it should run fine in Windows 7 under Win XP SP2 compatibility mode.
If you are running the very first edition of tie fighter, then just run DOSBox and you should be good to go. Apparently as per the OP the collector's edition runs fine in DOSBox as well, which is awesome. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I confirmed I have the Collector's edition, res goes up to 640x480. Things look a lot clearer now.
Yep - runs just fine in DOSBOX. Occasionally I have to adjust the # of CPU Cycles using [Ctrl] + [F8]/[F12]. But for the most part it runs smooth. Sound also comes through fine, selecting the settings referenced in the guide I linked in the first post.
If anyone needs help setting it up, be sure to post ...
I also bought the Defenders of the Empire expansion pack off Amazon, I'll let you guys know if I get that working too. I don't see why not. -
The collector's edition should already include both of the Tie expansion packs, the defenders of the empire pack included these missions:
"Strategic Warfare" (Omar system) — Zaarin attempts sabotage.
"T/D Technology" (Parmel system) — Secure TIE Defender technology.
"New Threats" (Eva-T system) — Counter-attack against Zaarin.
And the 2nd expansion Enemies of the Empire with these missions/systems:
"Hunt for Zaarin" (Semag system) — Thrawn seeks the traitor Zaarin.
"Prelude to Endor" (Yllotat system) — Investigate the Bothan-Rebel connection.
"The Emperor's Will" (Iast system) — Supporting the final stages of the Death Star II's construction
You can also tell if the Cygnus Missile (not assault) boat is playable as it was only included in those later editions.
Hope this helps and congrats on getting it running again very jealous! -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Good info. I haven't known about the expansion packs prior. I know in the edition I have, I get to fly the Missile Boat a lot as well as the Gunboat.
Is the 2nd expansion included in the Collector's edition also? I'm guessing not, I do not recognize the systems/missions you mentioned. Then again, it has been a while. -
From the two sites I have been able to find yes. Defender's of the Empire was the only one of the two expansion to have ever been sold separately, but was in fact included in all future editions of the game (Collectors CD-ROM, Collector's Series, then the X-wing versions). While Enemies of the Empire was simply never released on its own and bundled with the game for the remainder of its releases.

Hope this helps =) -

Now I am going to have to find a way to hook up the floppy drive again...
Maybe its just time to buy a USB floppy drive finally. -

Yeah I think I have the floppies too, have to find them and see if they even work still. Although I did load up Freespace 2 with the Freespace Open mod, but may try to give this a whirl now if I can find it. May have to hit up Amazon. Darn you Chaz!

I loved this game, one of my earliest games and one of the reasons Im a PC Gamer.
I still have the floppy disc edition too -
I came into the series with XvT so I didn't get to play X-Wing or TIE Fighter. I can't even play XvT since I gave my copies to my friend when his copies were messed up, but he put those in storage somewhere. I hope GOG gets LA so we can get their other classics running at a decent price.

Back in late 1993, I was still addicted to my Sega Genesis.
My best friend had just got married, and with his super-huge salary (worked for WordPerfect in it's heyday), he purchased a top of the line 486DX2-66.
My girlfriend (a few months later, my wife) and I went to visit them, and while the women did whatever women do when they're left on their own, my friend introduced me to PC gaming with Master of Orion and X-Wing. I had played Doom on the university computer, but didn't get hooked (probably because I was horrible...nothing like it on the consoles).
X-Wing was amazing. I remember watching my friend fly over a Star Destroyer, and it was the most incredible Star Wars moment that I ever had outside the movies (including the arcade game which I loved...the vector graphics machine with the yoke...).
I couldn't wait until I graduated and got a job so I could buy a PC which happened about a year later. I bought a Micron P90, and my first game was Tie Fighter on floppies. I wore that game out with a Gravis gamepad with the stick screwed into the d-pad. Never played it with an analog stick (didn't own one until the MS Sidewinder 3D Pro which got abused playing Mechwarrior 2).
I later bought the Collector's CD-ROM for both X-Wing and Tie Fighter. Those CDs went everywhere that I went until I left my CD case in a hotel room in Atlanta (the reason that I now have all my CDs imaged onto my HDD...games were expensive to replace or irreplaceable at the time).
I couldn't find the Collector's CD-ROMs anymore so I had to pick up the even more "enhanced" Collector's series. I didn't mind the loss of the iMuse as much as I hated what they did to the X-Wing sign in screen and a few other cutscenes along with horrible "Totally Games" logo that started popping up with XvT. I also hated that you had to have a joystick plugged in...although my USB Saitek P2600 works well with it.
I've had both X-Wing and Tie Fighter installed on the m1710 since I purchased the laptop, and they run well under XP except for the 3D (?) graphics mode (I can select 320x200, 640x480 8-bit, 640x480 16-bit, or 3D from Options when NOT in-flight) which is extremely choppy.
I saw the thread, and fired it up. Just like Chaz said, all the function keys for energy management, and keys for weapons linking/switching and throttle control come right back.
The below screenshot is from tonight doing a missile boat run on the obstacle course (with my wife aka the girlfriend from 1993 still telling me to "Turn it off").
And thanks for the reminder Chaz...it's time to go pick up the Collector's CD-ROMs from Amazon or eBay and play through again without the minor annoyances of my version...Attached Files:

I'm playing in 3d fooo -
I still remember the damn-near-impossible final mission on Ghost Bear Legacy--the one where they drop you on the outside of a dropship in outer space, and you need to get inside and blow something up, but the external defensive turrets are blasting away at you before you even start up...brutal. -
-
I opened this thread expecting somme type of remake. -

Penny Arcade - This Isn’t Your Father’s Trilogy -
X-Wing. vs. Tie Fighter is still in my Amazon wishlist (plenty used copies still available).
I used to watch my friend play it back in the day, was an awesome game.
Some day I'll get it myself.

Anyone have any recommendations on mods for freespace 2/mw4?
-
-
-
why is MW4 20 times harder than MW3?
I remmber beating MW3 when I was 12 years old, yet 1/2 the of the missions on mw4 are a PIA.
I also thought mw3 looked better, then again its been 10 years since I played... -
Buy FS2 at gog.com if you don't have it.
Then download the installer here: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
For a full update it's like 10GB! But a lot of that are new FMV's. You can skip those, but I think it's still like 4-5GB. -
Well, I would recommend BP:AoA and BP:WiD.
I have fun with WoD and JAD
My fs2 folder is over 40GB ... played with it too much.
A little warning those with AMD cards (on the pc side of things)...you may need to tinker and extract to use specific drivers to resolve weird graphic behaviors or outright crashes. It's a stupid issue with AMD borking opengl on every other driver update which is really inconsistent.
Most of their coders work almost exclusively on Nvidia cards. They do try to fix AMD's but it takes awhile since they don't have one on hand. Or make compromises by sacrificing quality to get it to work somewhat.
TIE Fighter - that's right - calling all pilots
