    Hi ,

    Can you guys please elaborate , in general terms , the difference in terms of performance between
    1) Nvidia 670m
    2) Nvidia 675m
    3) Radeon 7970m

    Will be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    The 7970m performs 15-75% better than the 675m depending on the game.

    The Nvidia cards will generally have better drivers with more exclusive features (FXAA, adaptive VSync, ambient occlusion, optimus).

    However, the AMD drivers should be fine, and are getting better, they also have some new features in the 7XXX series that may close some of the ground in terms of features with Nvidia.

    The 680m should be coming out within a few months and should perform as well or better than the 7970m.

    If you have to buy today the 7970m is the best performance choice. Nvidia has some exclusive features, if you can wait you might want to see what the 680m offers before making your choice.

    The nvidia cards are both 40nm, whereas the radeon is 28nm. On top of that, the nvidia cards are built on tech two generations old, they're simply rebrands (though that's not to call them bad).

    The AMD card will be the most powerful of the lot, with the 675 and 670 following. However, any of those cards should be enough to play modern games at high settings for now. I'd reckon the radeon might be about 20% faster, maybe a little more or less.

    And the gap may grow when the 7970M has more than bootleg driver support.

    Lol @ 20%. Come on son.

    The 7970m is directly comparable to a desktop gtx 570. Right now, the 7970m is the only card to get.

    the 670/675 are based on 40nm fermi tech which is 2 gen's old now. Nvidia is said to come out with a 680m which will be the 7970's competition, but we don't know when and how powerful this card will be. Speculation is rampant right now, but it appears that AMD has gone "ALL IN" with the 7970m this round. The Nvidia 680m will have to be very good to even match AMD's current offering. most expect it to be slightly more powerful when it comes out...we'll see as it's all speculation at this point

    Anandtech quotes that the 7970M is 25% faster than 580M based on specs. I`m guessing that 7970M is around 40% faster than 580M in reality.

    GTX 675M is a GTX 580M and is around 12% faster than 670M

    Tangible is something that can be touched, not gaming performance, so the thread title is slightly ambiguous.

    But as everyone has stated the 7970M is far superior. There are many threads on this forum, especially on this subforum if you just look.

    in benchmarks

    670M -> 675M is around 30% increase

    675M -> 7970M is around 90% increase.

    670M -> 675M is $100

    675M -> 7970M is $100

    It may be better with benchmarks but no way in hell 7970M is even remotely close to 90%+ over the 675M. And its not as powerful as GTX 580M SLI or 6990M CF either like notebookcheck says with their ratings.

    Nah-a

    Well we already have it outperforming the 675M SLI in some tests, just like the 6990M before it did the same versus 560M SLI.

    Overall, no, but in some tests like above where it's beating the 675M by over 60%, it's going to come down to how well SLI or CFX scales in those games. Even if the 7970M comes within 25% of the dual cards, I'd consider that a small victory for the vast majority of us who prefer a single fast GPU.

    The 7970m is 18-76% faster depending on application.

    The average is 40-50%

    To be entirely fair, the desktop 7870 (the gpu the 7970m is based on) is 42% faster than the desktop 6870 (the gpu the 6990m is based on).
    The 6990m is roughly 2-5% slower than the 580m/675m.

    Even when all is said and done, the 40-50% number will fluctuate and may reach 60% at stock, but those claiming 90/100/9000% faster are just inflating the numbers or making bad comparisons.

    Regardless, the 7970m is in a whole new league above the 675.

    Yes, though the 580M is an overclocking beast... 40% extra on a high end card is pretty crazy.

    Though even with that you are looking at 4800 in 3dmark 11. It's also a complete power hog when clocked that high.

    Nvidia isn't going to release their 680m until they have something that's better than the 7970m, even if that means 5% better at double the cost. It's just how they do things, and no, it's not entirely practical.

    AMD has had its own graphics switching technology for 3-4 years now - Optimus is the better-recognized name, but you can get the same function with laptops equipped with AMD GPUs as long as its supported by the BIOS (which is the same caveat you'll get with Optimus - not every BIOS is designed to support it).

    I'm not sure about other manufacturers, but both Optimus and Enduro are supported in the new Sager lines. This automatic graphics switching is getting more and more common. AMD keeps changing the naming so it's not as recognizable as Optimus.

    Link to the source that shows Enduro is supported on the new EM Clevos line.
    ONLY Optimus is confimed so far. Enduro support is still questionable.

    And if you mean Enduro being stated as a 7970M feature on Sagers website thats not a confirmation yet. They might again just be listing the GPU features (and we all know the GPU can support something but it wont work without proper Bios and driver support). Sager made the same blunder with stating Optimus support with the HM series which was never implemented.
    Im not saying it wont be supported, but dont state with such certainty it will as we have no real confirmation or evidence to support it yet.

    I didn't realize they did that with Optimus for the HM's. I guess that's why they put that tiny note of "specifications are subject to change without notice" at the bottom.

    Before actually using the word "latest" let Nvidia release their 2012 line proper first. This thread compares 28nm AMD to last year 40nm Nvidia which is basically pointless and there is no reason to get exited about anything.

    7970 is fast comparing to 2011 cards. Let's wait for the whole spectrum of what 2012 will have to offer. Then any GPU 28nm comparison discussion will actually make any sense.

    The OP is obviously looking to buy a gaming notebook now or soon, and those three cards are the only options. So of course the 7970M is getting the rave recommendations, as it should.

    The "latest" is what is actually available, and that's still 40nm cards on the green side. Whose fault is that? Blame Nvidia or God.

    Yes. AMD has the APP SDK which serves the same purpose. It's not as widely used as CUDA, but I have seen a few applications which leverage it, but the fact is that neither technology is particularly widely used, nor extremely relevant moving forward.

    There are now four competing technologies which serve the same purpose:

    OpenCL, DirectCompute, Cuda, and Stream.

    OpenCL is open, royalty-free, cross platform
    DirectCompute is closed, proprietary, windows only
    Cuda and Stream are closed, proprietary, vendor specific

    ATi drivers defintely don't live up to Nvidia drivers, which I tend to find are stable. The biggest issue with pre 12.x Catalyst packages was CCC. Alot of the time the vBios would reject CCC, which would instantly BSOD with my R2. I had to use Dell's old CCC and manually extract the files, go to device manager and target the extracted INF files and manually update the drivers like that. Thankfully with at least 12.3 beta, I don't have that issue anymore.

    Sigh... AMD's drivers are not THAT bad.

    I will give Nvidia props for longer support, and having more stable beta drivers than AMD release drivers though.

    However, both AMD and Nvidia are head and shoulders better than Intel.

    Did I miss something here? It usually takes at least a few months for new components to drop in price, typically when something newer comes out, but sometimes to a lesser extent before that occurs.

    I've been using ATI/AMD cards exclusively since the Geforce 2 (last nvidia card owned) era. It was a price vs. performance decision, not a fanboy decision. I have never experienced a driver related problem other than crossfire flickering in Skyrim.

    Includes both mobile and desktop cards in single and crossfire configurations.

    Edit: I should add that I only update my drivers when a new game will not run properly on the old ones. So I update drivers 3-4 times per year instead of eagerly jumping on every release. Maybe that contributes to my "luck"?

    I suggest you go and look up some hardware forums, not just this one, and you will find many that have trouble with AMD drivers. Nvidia is far ahead of AMD with drivers. Not just the functionality but Nvidia work closely with the companies that make the games insuring better performance out of their drivers.

    Yes of course. Impossible to make drivers that support and work with every system there is, but its still no where near AMD.
