Depends what you're going for. If you want realism, then go Operation: Flashpoint. Or - if you want CS with tanks, then BF2 is the way to go.

Or - you could go retro and play Scorched Earth.

Red Orchastra has some very realistic tank battles from WWII. You can switch between AP and HE shells. One person drives the tank. One is the commander/gunner and the third guy runs the MG gun. A cool thing is that some of the shells bounce of the opponents tank if they hit wrong. It is a very fun game. :D

The tanks in BF2 are wicked fun to use. I think that's what I miss most about playing BF2 regularly...

BattleField 1942 had some good tank battles (my history professor even recommended it for his weapons classes). Yet, I suggest you get the Forgotten Hope expansion, which adds some more realism to the game.

BF2 has some very fun tank battles. I recall my Karkand game, while MEC I camped one of the US artiliry spawn points, got around 50 tank kills that game and died once. Needless to say we won, with 2x I got about 150 in that round, and I pissed alot of people off, it was fun though.

Battlefield 2142 is coming out in the fall, its not only going to have tanks in it, but the battlefield equivalent to mech's. It look really great, but not like mech wars at all. Take a look at that game, it looks hella fun!

Brilliant! You know there is a open source 3D version of it? It's called Scorched 3D, too bad it you need a half decent GPU to run it.

I just can't help but laugh whenever 1942 and realism are used in the same sentence. But - it's good for the odd bash at a LAN (especially when everyone whinges about OFP's graphics  ).
