Yeaup, I just got my Orange Box a few days ago, I installed Portal and Team Fortress 2. Beat Portal in a few hours, and now I'm onto Team Fortress 2. All I have to say is that the game is pretty awesome. I'm not too good with any type of shooter, but at least I'm very addicted to this one!

I'll be online tonight after 8pm (US Eastern) to play, I'd be happy to play with anyone on NBR!!!! (Although I have yet to figure out how Steam and everything works)

Of course it is! I still play it AT LEAST once a day. I usually play Pyro or Scout.

How's the performance on your machine?
I have a vostro 1500 and with everything at high, 4X AA, 4x AF, HDR, and Motion blur the game still runs around 40-50 when there is barely any fight, and around 20-25 during heavy gun fights, which if you ask me is really really good. And if I go and take my chances and use mat_queue_mode 2 it improves heavy gun fight to 30-35, at the risk of crashes.

Beat Portal in a few hours? Are you on speed? It's short, but not that short. Unless you are stretching the 'few' hours to mean like five or six?

Yep amazing game, gotta love the people over at valve. Also steam is a very nice application, it in my opinion has the best server browser I have ever used.

also you hear the updates they are planning for tf2

    -weapon unlocks
    -new game modes
    -maps

I run it 1280x800, all high, HDR, AA2x, no AF, and get a solid 30+ no matter what is going on. 45 when just running, but in HUGE fights it drops to around 30-35.

I still have not broken down and bought the orange box yet. Tell me, have they added any hunted style maps to TF2 yet? Man I used to LOVE those maps! Its been a long time since I played, maybe I should just break down and buy it. BTW I know Valve has some serious hunted junkies that work there so I am sure they will add it eventually, its just too bad it didn't make it into the initial release.

Question, I bought the game, installed it, say if I were to uninstall it, can I install it again without the CDs? Can I just download it off of Steam for free (since I already purchased the CDs)?

I never bothered checking with this game because I thought that this game isn't very demanding, so there shouldn't be problems with me running it with everything on high. And I do play it with everything on high, but I'm not too sure about AA and AF. I'll get back to you.

It's like, 2 hours, 3 at most. I've played most of the missions before at a friend's house, and I also played First Slice many times, so I was familiar with the puzzles. I just never got to see the ending before.

I think new maps would be better than anything. I also think they should put custom map games separately, I hate having to wait 10 mins for a map to download...

well i love the custom maps, they are amazing fun, especially the sports ones hehe.

anyway if you hate downloading them why dont you look up their names, download them from the servers website since they will then have all the custom maps they use there and place them in the maps directory

Once you install/buy a game on Steam, that game becomes tied to your account. So if you wanted to reinstall it, you just have to download Steam login and download it. You can do this as many times as you want and on as many computers as you want. This is actually the reason I like Steam so much since I don't have to worry about the physical media at all.

Is TF2 only playable online? I mean, can we play with one character that we chose, and others played by computer (our team's and the opposition's), kind of like with Unreal Tournament's Team Death Match? I mean without playing against other people, but just with the computer? Like if I don't have the Internet.

i adore TF2, i can usually be found on the sourceOP 24/7 ctf_2fort servers playing as either demoman, spy or heavy (occasionally switching to medic or engineer if the team needs them) we should try to arrange a NBR meetup of the TF2 players on a good server at some point :) that could prove to be fun :p

did you guys now there is a field of view option in team fortress 2 under the mutlplayer tab

@ Chaz...good luck with run and gun lol...maybe as you progress youl get good at it but at first you have to be very teamwork based ( im like you like to run and gun, thats why i got very frustrated at the beggining since I always got owned, but now that i know how each class plays its much much more enjoyable)

I reckon for you the best class would be spy....run to enemy cloacked and disguised as one of them, uncloak, backstab them, run away cloaked.

Been living in a cave for the last year? ;)
I thought screenshots from it had been everywhere ever since it was announced. (It almost competed with Duke Nukem for the "vaporware of the century" award, after all, so it was *big* when it was finally announced)

Anyway, here's something better than screenshots:

TF2 is the best multiplayer shooter I have ever played. I can play that game for hours on end when I have time. :)

It takes a little while IMHO to get used to everything and how the classes work and compliment each other, but after that, you are good to go. :)

its not kills that matter, but points

if you're spy, each backstab = 2 points = easy to rack up 100+

I love TF2, only game I'm playing during the week with classes going on. It's really easy to just pick up a game, and most games I've been in we usually don't get rolled, unless the other team is mostly a clan. I'm pretty excited for the new unlockables and new maps...should make it rival CoD4 in awesomeness.

It's a great map though. (That is, I haven't seen the TF2 version yet, but assuming it's similar to the old one, it's a great map - especially for spies :D)

I can run one, and give you all the IP, but need to be assured that it will have people playing on it, there's no point in running a dead server with no one playing. And at my current network speed it would be a 14-18 player max server. I think that's enough for a full fun game though.. Unless someone has better options?

I'll set it up tonight then, and test it out with some other people, if the pings are low, and there's minimal to zero lag, I'll keep it up 24/7 and post the IP here. Then see where it goes from there..

btw, what's a good server name? As in what should I name the server?

Ok, FINALLY, after hours of setting it up, writing the cfg files etc.. It's up and running. It's not finished being set up, but it is running, and in order to finish it, I'll need people to join it and tell me how it is.

    TF2 NBR server 64.160.116.63:27015

    Play!

Please give me feedback on Xfire or steam or here about how smooth it is, or suggestions. Including where you live.

I am located in California so expect pings of 20-50 on the west coast, 50-60 if you live in the middle of the US, and 90-120 if you live on the direct east coast, such as new york.
Other places such as the UK usually get around 220-300 ping in my servers so you guys are almost gaurenteed to be laggy unless you live in the US.

I am surprised how well, Team fortress run with DDR2 Version of 8600m GT, with everything set to High/Very High/Reflect All, 4x AA, 16x AF, V-Sync, Motion Blur, Boom/HDR, 1280x800. These are the frame rates I get:

Min: 13 during heavy gun fights.
    Average 30-35
    Max 45-51 In Door.

Some Screenshots for the above setting:
